New CNN Poll: Perry sits atop GOP field
CNN ^ | August 29, 2011 | CNN Deputy Political Director Paul Steinhauser

Washington (CNN) – A new national survey is further proof that Texas Gov. Rick Perry's entrance earlier this month into the race for the White House has dramatically altered the battle for the Republican presidential nomination.

According to a CNN/ORC International Poll of Republicans and independent voters who lean towards the GOP, Perry now sits atop the list of Republican presidential candidates, with strong support from most demographic groups.

Full results (pdf)

The survey, released Monday, indicates that 27 percent of Republicans nationwide support Perry for their party's nomination, with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who's making his second bid for the White House, at 14 percent. Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin follows at ten percent, with Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani at nine percent, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, who's making his third bid for the presidency, at six percent. Every one else listed on the questionnaire registered in the low single digits.

The survey follows a Gallup poll out last week which also placed Perry at the top of the GOP field. Other polling released in the past week also confirms the findings of the CNN and Gallup surveys.

"Perry's support is higher among Republican men, at 32 percent, than Republican women, at 23 percent, but he has more support among either group than any other candidate," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

According to the survey, Perry supporters tend to be older and have higher incomes, but the longtime Texas governor also tops the list, albeit by smaller margins, among lower-income Republicans and those under 50 years old.

At this point, I believe only two things can derail a Perry nomination. One is a major gaffe in the debates or on the campaign trail. The second is someone else entering the race such as Sarah Palin. Barring those two events, I think we’re looking at our nominee. Republicans were dissatisfied with the field, now the polls show they are satisfied. I sense people coalescing around Perry.

I tend to agree on all counts. I’ve been a Palin supporter, but Perry is satisfactory on most of the important issues, and if Palin announced she was endorsing Perry, I wouldn’t be heartbroken.

I've heard that Sarah Palin will undoubtfully get a 30% point lead over Perry and the rest of the group within the first two hours of announcing.

Link?

Unless SP gets in soon, this is quickly becoming a two person race.

I agree. Sarah needs to get in or declare herself out on September 3rd. The race is on and people are picking their horse now.

Oh and I just heard that George Jetson will get 40% lead over everyone on all planets, Pluto and Jupiter especially.

I’m glad someone has the energy to keep looking up and refuting these charges.

Re: RED SOUTH, I'll do it the first few times just in case some new person might think it's true. Once the regulars have seen it a few times I'll just ignore it and him.

I suspect Palin’s polling numbers would be near the top, had she served out her term as governor and stayed current. Something tells me that would’ve helped her numbers. They’re still respectable though.

I wouldn't think Mr. Spacely would let him run.

I also am from Texas and Perry is not even in my top 3.

If and when he wins the GOP nomination he will be in almost everyone's top two.

“Some details would be helpful...”

Here are some:

1) A democratic hack made accusations in a letter handed to the Bill White (Dem) campaign when Bill White was running against Perry.

2) The matter was fully put to rest by an independent investigation.

3) Perry beats White by a large margin.

I’m coming from: I do not think he would win in November 2012. Hope that clears it up. :)

Man I love the way you think.

Move Palin from department to department with the task of shutting each one of them down. She would get 4 or 8 years of additional exec experience, then be perfectly positioned to run for Pres or VP in 2020.

BTW I think we should appoint Huntsman to lead the DOPUIBPOS.

Thanks for the post. It shows Perry really leading, given the fact taht all of the strong Romney showings are a week or two before the polls that show Perry surging.

Great idea!

I was thinking Perry’s VP with the same result.

Thanks. Seems like Red South will swallow anything the Texas Dems will dish out, as long as it appears to make Perry look bad.

From what I've been told by hardcore Sarah Palin supporters the reason for the delay in announcing is to minimize having to debate against Perry and the others in the group. The less time she's actually in the race the less chance of committing any gaffes and being pounded by the media.

That's a pretty strange comment, actually, it's bizarre enough to be entirely made up, actually I'm pretty sure it's a total fabrication. Care to name even one name or source?
