New CNN Poll: Perry sits atop GOP field
CNN ^ | August 29, 2011 | CNN Deputy Political Director Paul Steinhauser

Washington (CNN) – A new national survey is further proof that Texas Gov. Rick Perry's entrance earlier this month into the race for the White House has dramatically altered the battle for the Republican presidential nomination.

According to a CNN/ORC International Poll of Republicans and independent voters who lean towards the GOP, Perry now sits atop the list of Republican presidential candidates, with strong support from most demographic groups.

Full results (pdf)

The survey, released Monday, indicates that 27 percent of Republicans nationwide support Perry for their party's nomination, with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who's making his second bid for the White House, at 14 percent. Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin follows at ten percent, with Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani at nine percent, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, who's making his third bid for the presidency, at six percent. Every one else listed on the questionnaire registered in the low single digits.

The survey follows a Gallup poll out last week which also placed Perry at the top of the GOP field. Other polling released in the past week also confirms the findings of the CNN and Gallup surveys.

"Perry's support is higher among Republican men, at 32 percent, than Republican women, at 23 percent, but he has more support among either group than any other candidate," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

According to the survey, Perry supporters tend to be older and have higher incomes, but the longtime Texas governor also tops the list, albeit by smaller margins, among lower-income Republicans and those under 50 years old.

Does Palin have to abide by those deadlines?

(sorry...that is just tacky...I apologize)

At this point, I believe only two things can derail a Perry nomination. One is a major gaffe in the debates or on the campaign trail. The second is someone else entering the race such as Sarah Palin. Barring those two events, I think we’re looking at our nominee. Republicans were disatisfied with the field, now the polls show they are satisfied. I sense people coalescing around Perry.

Alan Keyes also entered the race in September. So far as I can remember though, there were no other big entries into the race from the initial set back in March.”

I’m not sure Alan Keyes entering the race qualified, ahem, as a “big entry”....

In that case, I expect Palin to be pimping reverse mortgages around this time in 2015.

Prediction: Perry is the nominee, and the 45th President.

Romney attracts criticism that he is writing off S.C., Iowa (needs to “put in some effort”)

I’ve accepted that Perry is our best electable choice, much to my chagrin as I was hoping for Cain.

Regardless, Perry is our best chance of a 1980-style victory against The One.

If I'm going to fantasize about Republican presidential nominees, I'll fantasize about Ronald Reagan coming back to life to run, or Milton Friedman.
Well that's not quite the same thing now, is it?

But I get your point. And I basically share your point of view.

For me, right now, I would love to see Palin as Secretary of the Interior in a Perry presidency... or better yet: head of the EPA with the task of dismantling it.

Man, there would be heads exploding all OVER this country! We're going to need a Department of Picking up Itty-Bitty Pieces of Skull!

I guess what it shows is that more the conservative-appearing the candidate, the quicker he rises to the top of the poll.

Perry appointed friends and donors to the Teacher Retirement System Board who steered hundreds of millions of teacher dollars - and millions in fees - to firms run by Perry donors.

As Ronald Reagan would say, "There you go again!"

The Teachers Retirement System is governed by a Board of Trustees. The Board is composed of nine trustees who are appointed to staggered terms of six years. Three trustees are direct appointments of the governor. Two trustees are appointed by the governor from a list prepared by the State Board of Education. Two trustees are appointed by the governor from the three public school district active member candidates who have been nominated for each position by employees of public school districts. One trustee is appointed by the governor from the three higher education active member candidates nominated by employees of institutions of higher education. One trustee is appointed by the governor from the three retired member candidates who are nominated by retired TRS members.

I guess you're implying that these teachers and retired teachers are somehow bribing Perry with TRS money.

In 2000, when Perry took office, the TRS had more assets than it needed to fund retiree benefits for more than 30 years.

But by 2010, the TRS has an unfunded liability of $21.6 billion.

I haven't check those figures yet but ever hear of the DOT.com crash of 2000-2003 and the 2008 crash? The NASDAQ isn't even back up to half what it was 11 years ago. And how much interest does a bank CD or Money Market Fund return these days. The TRS got hurt just like everybody else did.

My gut tells me this guy’s going to lose it for us. Don’t know how, precisely; I can’t read entrails.

Don’t worry about Giuliani entering the race. It might even be a good thing. The only votes he could possibly get would be coming from the more liberal end of Romney’s bench.

And he wouldn’t get many of those.

He’s way better than Romney but I still want Sarah to run. That said, I will vote for anyone that can beat the Marxist Kenyan Muslim usurper and get him and his snotty wife out of our WH.

Where will the numbers be once Aug 2011 is flushed from the list?

CNN and Gallup (the bottom two on your chart that had Romney ahead in early Aug.) now have Perry by double digits.

As far as I'm aware, FOX hasn't re-polled since Perry announced. I would imagine however that the results will be somewhere along the lines of ALL (literally all) of the other reputable polls showing Perry with a double-digit lead.
