If someone would overlay single incidents of thunderstorms this past year with Irene's track, I think it safe to say more death and destruction was created by the thunderstorms.

Yes, we’ve had more than a few of those, too. Difference is that they’re usually over in a few minutes.
Last month we had no power for almost two days after one of those storms.
