Or, the classic Henny Youngman joke..

"My doctor's a wonderful guy....told me I had six months to live. Gave me his bill. I told him I couldn't pay it, so he gave me an extra six months to live.."

we've been getting tickled by the northern fingers of this thing, tho no wind to speak of .. yet.

Just enough to let you know she's on her way. Have dinner ready.

That doesn’t sound good. Does that mean the breach is pulling the water out?

The eye ( actually the eyewall) is crucial to the storm's integrity, and it's strenght..think of it as the hub on a bicycle tire..if it's weak..if it breaks down..then the storm streaks to "fall apart"

from what I read, what caused Irene to weaken, or maybe, "not strengthen" is a better way to put it...is the upper steering currents in the jet stream..these dtermine the storm's path..but they can also "attack it"..but is up..till it starts to fall apart..

Tropical systems require warm water to fuel them. Over land, the storms will dissipate--eventually.

Forward speed is not directly affected by land. We have seen, however, some tropical storms that skirt around land masses.

The eye is a hole in the clouds with no rain, no wind, and very low barometric pressure. In a well formed hurricane eye, it is absolutely possible to see the sun or the stars from ground level. Many, many people over the centuries have been fooled into believing the suddenly clear skies and lack of wind meant the storm was over. Just as suddenly, very strong eyewall winds (from the opposite direction) and rain pick up with a fury as the back side of the storm moves in.

>>>This storm chaser on Fox is scary to watch right now. I am always fearful we are going to witness one of these people get killed one day.

Sadly, it’s going to take multiple incidents of Lib-tard liberal Democrat stenographers to become news corpses - literally- before they will change their idiotic ways.

"It's been raining steadily for the past 1.5 hrs at a rate of ~.5"/hr (Northumberland Cty, PA)."

We are getting nothing. Hershey Park is open. Clouds now but rain later.

Sumps are workin' & ShopVacs are standin' by.
A big bowl of Life for lunch and ham sammies w/homegrown tomato for dinner.
Good to go !

The sumps get a tiny bit overwhelmed ~3x/yr so am well qualified with vac procedure.
Rain's still coming down but has eased considerably in the past half hour.

For anyone who might be interested, someone posted a link for a live shortwave feed from Hurricane Watch Net.
(apologies to the original poster, but don't feel like diggin' for it ;-)

Their 'about us' reads as follows:

The Hurricane Watch Net consists of a group of licensed Amateur Radio Operators trained and organized to provide essential communications support to the National Hurricane Center during times of Hurricane emergencies.
Our primary mission is to disseminate tropical cyclone advisory information to island communities in the Caribbean, Central America, along the Atlantic seaboard of the U.S., and throughout the Gulf of Mexico coastal areas.
We also collect observed or measured weather data from amateur radio operators in the storm affected area as well as any post storm damage, and convey that information to the Hurricane Forecasters in the National Hurricane Center via the amateur radio station in the center (WX4NHC).

Hope everybody's dry and keeps power throughout . . .
