Approximately 65 million people are likely to be directly impacted by Hurricane Irene as the storm takes aim at the densely populated Eastern Seaboard. Evacuations are underway for high flood risk areas.
Mass transit cancellations, schedule changes and road/bridge closures are occurring throughout the storm warning areas. Please check with local news and Emergency Management Operations to determine the recommendations for your immediate area.

I think it’s more likely than not that JFK airport is essentially destroyed.

That thing is STILL burning? Damn. Smoke from that floated up here earlier this month so bad that local authorities put out a media release about the fire and issued a health advisory for Code Red air pollution.
The latest hour’s Delaware River flood models show Moderate Level Flood, almost Major Flood. Got the automated call that says a bunch of my neighbors are under mandatory evac orders.
However looks to me like Irene is making a turn to a direct run for the Grand Banks and this may be it’s closest approach to the east coast except for eastern Newfoundland.
