Cheney kept secret resignation letter By: Tim Mak August 24, 2011 02:21 PM EDT
Dick Cheney kept a secret resignation letter locked away in a safe in case he were ever to be incapacitated, the former vice president reveals in his new book.
The letter, which Cheney signed in March of 2001, was written because of his health.
The possibility that I might have a heart attack or a stroke that would be incapacitating there is no mechanism for getting rid of a vice president who cant function, he told NBC in an interview that will air Monday as the book is published.
The letter was locked in a safe at all times the location was not disclosed in the interview and known only to a handful of people, including President George W. Bush.
Cheney did the interview as part of the promotion for his upcoming memoir, In My Time, which hits the shelvesAug. 30.
This book is gonna make a lot of people angry, said NBC interviewer Jamie Gangel.
Cheney responded, There are gonna be heads exploding all over Washington, Jamie.

I just read the story and some of the comments @ yahoo news, liberal heads are already exploding!
Cheney is a wonderful man as well as an unrivaled VP. I'm still waiting for libtards to fully explain what his once connection to Haliburton had to do with anything. Furthermore, I'm still waiting for anyone to fully explain what Haliburton had to do with anything............
I cannot wait to read this book. Pre-ordered it for my iPad last week.
Why not? It would have been a validly signed resignation letter from a VP delivered and (presumably) accepted by the POTUS. It was signed while he was not incapacitated.
I have no idea what you are implying, care to expand on your statement?
” interview with homover “
Sue, sometimes typos are amusing!
Apparently there is also no mechanism for getting rid of a president who can’t function.
I love that photo. It’s like Cheney giving him that look that says “don’t even TRY to fool me, you @#$%^. We BOTH know who and what you are.”
oh good grief!!!!!! I didn’t see that one. I must be typing dyslexic again.
My apologies, Mr. Vice President.
God Bless Dick Cheney!
(and I will be getting this book)
Wonder why he signed it “July 5th.”?
Interesting letter
why was it dated july 05?
it was honorable to take the blame but he didn’t resign
this is not the same as a resignation letter from a VP
Oh, hush.
Cheney is a good man, and Bush is, too. A very good man, and a good President. I wish we had him back.
One of Bush’s best moves was talking Cheney into running with him.
According to Ike, it was a simple mistake.
Ike’s letter was written on the eve of the D-Day invasion. You’ll note that it says the invasion failed. The letter was never formalized or submitted
It was written so that, in the event of failure (which did not happen), he would resign.
Just an interesting bit of history.
"Help is on the way!!!"
They were all standing and yelling it wildly along with him. I always thought it was one of the better acceptance speeches in the last several decades.
He did have rather a lot on his mind on June 5th.
