PRINCETON, NJ -- President Barack Obama is closely matched against each of four possible Republican opponents when registered voters are asked whom they would support if the 2012 presidential election were held today. Mitt Romney leads Obama by two percentage points, 48% to 46%, Rick Perry and Obama are tied at 47%, and Obama edges out Ron Paul and Michele Bachmann by two and four points, respectively.

These prospective election ballots -- measured Aug. 17-18, well over a year before the Nov. 6, 2012, election -- indicate that the race for president at this point is generally competitive, with voters fairly evenly divided in their preference for giving Obama a second term or electing a Republican candidate. Even though the four Republican candidates tested have varying degrees of name recognition, they all fare roughly the same.

The battle field is very fluid right now. The ‘beach head’ has been softened up quite a bit for the attack (soon to come).
What was the makeup of the polling sample?
"You think these suckers are gonna vote for you after all your screwups, Obama?"
"My screwups? You the one who enraged the country, globe-trotting in designer outfits."
This is why all those dormant Freepers and newbies have crawled out of the woodwork during the last couple of weeks.
The reality is that Ron Paul just runs to raise a few pet issues up for public awareness. Bachmann is a serious candidate who deserves some respect. The media desperately wants to marginalize her. They will marginalize both Perry and Romney later, but right now they want Michelle out.
You know what this means, folks??? ABO (Anyone But Obama)!!! If you put a rag doll up against this bozo, America hater, POTUS Obama, he loses!!! Democrat Party take note. The time to broom this empty suit America destroyer is running out very quickly!!! Now, if you Democrat types all want to go down politically with this incompetent, be my guest!!!
These polls understate how bad things are for Obama.
If crazy Ron Paul is running only 2 pts behind him nationally, Obama is in far more serious trouble than his handlers might think.
So much for the establishment’s theory that Perry is unelectable that they’ve been peddling the last week.
Not bad for Bachmann either.
I’ll vote for either of them but Romney needs to be defeated.
You have a very good point there. We could run a sack of potatoes with eyes painted on it and win right now. I think if Donald trump entered as a Repub and then was caught feeding live babies to undead orcas he’d still put up a fight at this point.
Bachman’s ahead?? Paul’s ahead?? Hahaha! The democrat’s heads must be exploding.
Plouffe’s head must be ready to explode right now.
These numbers are HORRIBLE for Obama
” What was the makeup of the polling sample? “
200 drunks on SSI
And 100 meth addicts on SSI
I just cannot believe anyone in their right mind could still
be supporting Obama! We are totally a nation of stupids then.
Completely contradicts Rass.
Sample of registered voters will favor Dems because in numbers they do outnumber GOP. If the poll used likely voters (people who are register and plan to vote, or plan to register and vote), numbers are more accurate.
Good point, thanks.
This is almost a sure sign he will lose. In May of 1980, Carter had a 25% polling advantage over Reagan.
A poll of registered voters.
A registered voter is someone, who at some time in their life, signed a piece of paper (either at town hall, or at the Department of Motor Vehicles). It doesn’t maen they vote...and about half of them don’t vote.
OTOH, a likely voter would crawl over broken glass to keep Obama out of office.
