On the Nature of the Perry Attacks
http://www.redstate.com ^ | Saturday, August 20th | Erick Erickson

Posted on 08/20/2011 4:50:00 PM PDT by Para-Ord.45

Rick Perry once tried to get out of a speeding ticket.

Rick Perry once owned stock in a chain of video stores competing against Blockbuster, some of which also rented adult movies.

Rick Perry once was a Democrat.

The attacks have come fast and furious against him. But most of the attacks take on a peculiar and very telling strain.

A reporter on television or in print will utter a sentence like this, “Privately many Republican consultants suggest Rick Perry may be too Texas or shoot from the hip too much and might turn off necessary independent voters and women.”

It sounds so serious. As Alex Castellanos said on CNN the other night on John King USA, some fear Rick Perry might have “Mad Cowboy Disease.”

Let me sum this all up for you into what Rick Perry’s biggest problem is.

Whether you are talking about Alex (Team Carole Strayhorn 2006) or Karl Rove (Team Kay Bailey Hutchison 2010) or a host of other national Republican consultants, Rick Perry and his Texas team have beaten a significant portion of them.

But they did not just beat them. In many cases, Team Perry then shut the consultants who opposed him out of future business with him.

So there are scores and scores of Republican consultants who have scores to settle with Rick Perry and his team. And for guys like Karl Rove, if Perry were to win the White House, Karl and a few others would see themselves shut out of White House business for at least four years.

Rick Perry may be the only guy in America to have beaten both Karl Rove and also Obama’s own consultant, David Axelrod.

So there’s a lot of score settling in a lot of the attacks. Next time you hear some Republican consultant say Rick Perry can’t win because he is too much of a cowboy, understand that it is probably a national Republican consultant fearful they will be shut out of work if Perry wins and, more importantly, understand that the same dynamics were in place in 1980 with Reagan’s “boys from California” team of consultants and the national consultants back them said the same about Reagan — he’s too much of a cowboy conservative who will alienate key voting blocks.

That’s not to say Perry is Reagan. It is to say the GOP national consultants have been pulling the same stuff since 1980.

That is laughable. Texas is one of the most conservative states in the USA. Perry is the most conservative politician currently holding statewide office in Texas. Perry is the most conservative Governor in the USA.

Bottom line - if you are attacking Perry, you might be a troll

Hey, you just convinced me that most of the pro-Perry posters are registered Democrats.

Nice try, won’t fly ... A Conservative Democrat in Conservative Texas that had long been dominated by Conservative Democrat politics ...

BS, Lyndon Baines Johnson was hardly a conservative by any standard. He was your Senator!

You people have vivid imaginations and imagine you are really Conservative and then you give instate tuition to illegal aliens while denying it to Americans

Sorry ~ to be a real conservative you must be consistently patriotic and loyal to the United States.

Other Democrats who changed to Republican:

Phil Gramm
John Connally
Ronald Reagan
James Baker
Sonny Perdue
Condoleeza Rice
Jesse Helms
Michelle Bachmann

If you’re calling Perry a RINO for changing party affiliation, you’re calling all of the above RINOs. Go back to DU.

Oh you arrogant person you. Perry is NOT the most conservative governor in the U.S. You have SC, VA, WI, FL, PA and many more that are way more conservative than Perry. You are screaming things that are not even 1/2 truths. Oh and I am not a DU guy so save your breath. I want a real conservative and Perry is not that person.

Executive experience ? Palin quit before serving out her term .. she lost an immense amount of credibility and support with that unwise move .

You are funny.

You use the same logic as the RomneyBOTs.
Identical.

Must be another Rove-planned RINOhood.

The truth is the people want anyone who has an ounce of common sense and who can beat Obama.

Inclined to agree, look what happened when the purists stayed home in 2008, we got The Won.

Palin DID quit her governorship
Palin DOES have a 50 - 60% disapproval rating
Palin DID support the Bridge to Nowhere before she opposed it

Your boy is asking for the highest accolade ~ to run as our candidate for President.

Sorry, he sc....d the pooch back when he took on being the Algore's chairman in Texas.

That is simply unforgivable.

Regarding the others, Gramm, Connally, Baker, Perdue, Rice and Helms didn't go on to run for President ~ and Bachmann made the big switch in her fourth year of college ~ long before getting into politics in any respect.

We used to need RINOs to run in the Souf' ~ you people shot or hanged 30,000 Republicans in fact, so it could be tough.

These days we don't need them.

Ronald Reagan NEVER ran for public office as a Democrat. He was not a RINO.

I think you’d get a 90% disapproval rating yourself on this forum! Get moving!

He seems to be all over the place on illegals, that concerns me too, but not enough to reject him. Sarah has the luxury of not having to govern in a border state (well canada to the south but that is not the same) so while her stance on illegals appears to be better she has not actually had to put it in action. She has also been unfairly (I believe) bashed for past statements about illegals....something about her believing in a path to citizenship blah blah blah. The bottom line is, no matter who is president we really need a tea party house and senate to keep them in check.

Lets face it, its Perry or Palin, and as far as I am concerned, that puts us in reasonably good shape against the commies.

The Governors in WI and NJ are far Leftwingtards compared to the Governors of IN and OH BTW. They have far to go to strip Union Power out of state government.

You’re 100% wrong. I apologize for appearing arrogant, but I suspect you know I’m right and that’s why you are lashing out.

1. Perry has done far, far more on tort reform than any other Governor. That’s a fact. He enacted Proposition 12 on med mal lawsuits and just passed legislation limiting frivolous lawsuits by levying some fees on plaintiffs and allowing meritless suits to be dismissed early in the process.

2. Perry signed the sonogram law mandating sonograms prior to abortions.

3. Texas has the best business climate in the USA, per Forbes, S&P, etc.

4. Perry has the best record against the intrusion of the EPA in the country. Perry is suing the Environmental Protection Agency on behalf of Texas over its December decision to regulate greenhouse gases as a pollutant.

I could go on and on and on. I’m right.

A relative and I were discussing this just the other day and came to the conclusion that the inside the beltway ‘Pubs like Rove sense they will be shut out if a Perry or some other outsider gets elected. It scares and angers them. Their importance will melt like snow cones in the Texas sun and their influence and big paychecks will disappear too. They want Romney, probably already have the promise of a job.
