Two American hikers who were detained in Iran have been sentenced to eight years in prison on charges of "illegal entry" and "espionage," the state TV website says.

There is no defense for these two, I’m sorry, even if they were in Iraq and got dragged across the border, Iraq isn’t much safer if any. These two either don’t have a complete brain cell between them, or they knew the dangers. You make your bed, you lie in it.

There's a reason why our Armed Forces where helmets and body armor when outside the wire. The area is not safe for Americans. If you are found on the Iranian border "Hiking while American," they will drag you over to their side and lock you up.

I said and will say it again - we should send them 10 years in Siberia and give them a taste of how people live somewhere else and then may be they will love their own GREAT country again.

There was a great example of this in an 80s movie called "Gotcha."

A college kid takes a trip to Europe and is caught up in espionage. He finds himself running for his life through East Berlin and escapes through "Checkpoint Charlie."

He asks the American Soldier, "Am I back in the American sector?" The guard says "Yes." The kid turns towards East Berlin, flips the bird and yells "F*** YOU!" The American Soldier says, "I've been wanting to do that for two years."

Iraq is a hostile country, it’s full of people who’d love to see western heads on a pike, or westerners hanging from the end of a rope.

It wasn't that long ago that an Irish woman working for the International Red Cross was kidnapped, tortured and dismembered.

They were hiking in Iraq and accidentally crossed the border. In the beautiful mountains there. I’m serious, they really are pretty. Not as nice as Montana but much more exotic. I bet if you went to some hiking message board you’d find Trust Funders pimping places like Iraq and Azerbaijan.

I agree with you. This really bothers me. Whatever else can be said about them, they are not spies and Iran should be punished or no American is safe overseas. We’ve given a lot of American blood in Iraq and the fact that Iran just feels they can control the place really irks me.

That’s why when working in Saudi you take precautions, like living in a guarded compound, escorts etc. I never said they deserve to be beheaded, I simply said they made their bed, now they lay in it. It’s either blind stupidity or maybe they were having a peek. I don’t really care, if it’s the latter it’s an internal situation for the US government VS the Iranian. US doesn’t even talk directly to the Iranians, they have to do it through a third party... the Swiss.
