Perry calls idea of U.S.-Mexico border wall ‘ridiculous’
MSNBC ^ | August 17, 2011 | Sarah Blackwill and Domenico Montanaro

Rick Perry called the idea of a wall across the entire U.S.-Mexico border “ridiculous” today in a stop in New Hampshire.

“You got strategic fencing in some of the metropolitan areas – it’s very helpful,” the Texas governor said. “But the idea that you’re going to build a wall from Brownsville to El Paso is just -- it’s ridiculous on its face.”

That was in the context of Perry saying how he'd asked Washington for 1,000 National Guard troops and how current efforts at border security are ineffective.

Perry swatted at the Obama administration’s assertion that the “border is safer than it’s ever been.”

“Six week ago, the president went to El Paso and sai the border is safer than it’s ever been,” Perry began. “I have no idea, maybe he was talking about the Canadian border. I will assure you one thing, if I’m president of the United States, the border will be secure.”

That is very close to Fort Huachuca in AZ...15 miles from the Mexico and US Border SE area. Ft. Hauchuca is where your Army military intelligence go to school. They also keep a close eye on the Mexico border in that area.
My son in law who is a Major MI Army Officer was at Ft. Huachuca. Another close relative was there a few months back for further MI training and is now in Afghanistan.

I know Fort Huachuca. I’ve been there and have close family who lived on the base several years back.

Why does this not surprise me?

We have a goodly number of Freepers who think we should kiss the ground and annoint Rick Perry the nominee just because he is not Mitt Romney.

Mitt wasn't even close to locking up the nomination before Perry jumped in.

And I'll say it now: Perry's key negative of open borders is far more damaging to the Republic than Romney's key negative of socialized medicine at the state level.

At worst, socialized medicine at the state level will bankrupt this country one state at a time. Open borders with tens of millions of new socialist loving new faux citizens will wreck the country in one election cycle.

Any area of fencing that is not double-fenced is puny. With all the circumstances involved with illegal crossing into the US many have concluded that double fencing and patrolling between is what’s needed.

Uh, I think we do over the years.

I do not know the reference. I do know that they could build the fence if they wanted to and that congress voted under Bush to do so and allocated the funds for it.

I believe it should be built and I believe the National Guard should patrol it.

We have a dangerous situation on the southern border (over and above the worst part...the absolute pourous nature of it and the deluge of illegals crossing it) that more and more...from the other side through drug lords and even through the Mexican military on occassion, is seeing military grade weapons and action on it.

Anyhow...I believe conservatively we have seen eye to eye on many, many issues over the years.

Which candidate, besides Perry and Romney, realistically, do you think has any chance of defeating Obama and won't be another Christine O'Donnell fiasco or another Alan Keyes fiasco?

Cut all benefits to illegals...ALL...without jobs...self deport would rid this country of most illegals. I know some areas in the USA...especially since the economy has gone on the skids is now like a ghost town...illegal mexicans, and others from central and south America have left for home. Illegals businesses that were supported by the illegals have had to close down.

I don’t think that it’s ridiculous. it would be a great place to dump garbage, radioactive waste, all kinds of junk to build a wall. It would make a lot of jobs. Put the illegals that are caught to work building it (at no pay). Then send them back home after a couple of years working on the wall. Maybe give them 100 bucks after you drop them off on the other side of the border.

Don’t they say they come here to work?

I agree, and the United States government refuses to help. It’s written that at one point Perry again took matters into his own hands, and established an elite unit of Texas Rangers to bolster border security. I don’t know the follow up on that.

I think so too.

But the idea of a fence is giving up — conceding defeat. There just hasn’t been the will to confront it. I think Perry is the one who will.

. It is not the Texas-Mexico border, but the US-Mexico border.

Well, yes, it's that, too. But it's still a river.

Can folks see why it is such a danger to the rest of the US to allow border state politicians and residents to determine immigration and border enforcement policies???

Look, Buster, I'm all in favor of securing the border and blocking illegal immigration. But, if you're going to be totally unrealistic as to a solution to the problem, you don't deserve to be listened to.

I accurately outlined the problem as it actually exists on the US-Mexico border in Texas. It's a geographical problem. You got a way to fix it?

We want to hear it. If you don't, you're part of the problem.

I live within 4 miles of the TEX/MEX border and the wall is pretty much a joke. A very expensive distraction. Your idea of a minefield coupled with triple strand concertina wire makes much more sense. Post signs in both English and Spanish warning of the minefield and be done with it.

I am NOT in favor of open borders, but I am against either a wall or a fence for technical reasons and because of the expense.

Far cheaper to give them free medical care through 0bamacare.

You convinced me on the mine fields. However, with the Mexican military crossing our border at will and even firing on border patrol we need to do more than just going after criminal employers.

I don’t care whose army it is. If they cross our border once and fire a shot I say unleash hell on their country. If Monaco sent troops across our border I’d invade them and turn the whole country into an American shopping mall as a warning to the rest of the world.

Many of the illegals leaving Georgia aren’t going back where they belong. They are just going to other states.

Operation Wetback was very successful in the ‘50s but that was before welfare. Illegals live quite well here on welfare.

So, you convinced me on the mine fields but I’d put two heavy infantry divisions plus air support on the border and create a DMZ from coast to coast using immanent domain to acquire the land. I’d have it so wired that nothing bigger than a cockroach could cross without coming under our gaze. Hostiles who refused to turn back when confronted would be arrested or fired on if they resisted.

We should have colonized the damn cesspool down there when we beat back their invasion and defeated them in 1848.

Exactly. There is no need for a $3 Billion Fence than can be climbed over in 20 seconds or blow-torched through in 20 minutes.

A few years ago, I spent a month driving around the Yucatan in Mexico on vacation with my family to see the jungles and the Mayan ruins.

As the road came near the Guatemala-Mexico border, I saw how Mexico was controlling their border. There was no Fence but there was a Mexican Army roadblock manned by Mexican soldiers with M-16's. They glanced at me and made a quick mental checklist: White. Blue eyes. Blond kids. Not Mestizo. Not Indio. They waved me right on through without a word.

Was I "racially profiled"? I sure was.

The next day, we were at some beach cabanas and I was talking to the Mexican owner in Spanish. Since I am Cuban-born and fluent in Spanish, he was more open with me than he might have been with some other American tourist.

"Todo este problema con los ilegales en los Estados Unidos es la culpa de los Americanos", he told me. ("All this problem with the illegals in the U.S. is the fault of los Americanos").

I asked him why.

"Because los Americanos are hypocrites. On the one hand, they whine and moan that they are being flooded with illegals and they don't want them. But then, when an illegal gets to the U.S., they give him a drivers license, they give him welfare, they give him medical care, they give him jobs,..."

The Mexican was absolutely right.

As you observed, the solution is pretty simple. If you chum the fish, the fish will come. If there is no food, the fish will leave.

It is pretty basic Behavioral Biology.

You put it better than I could. That is exactly what seems to be going on.

I attribute it to fear. The MSM et al have convinced so many conservatives that their values are anathema to the majority’s that they are now willing to compromise those values.

They no longer have the courage of their convictions so to speak.
