Real Clear Politics notes Unemployment Benefits Could Create Up To 1 Million Jobs
"I understand why extending unemployment insurance provides relief to people who need it, but how does that create jobs," Wall Street Journal's Laura Meckler asked Jay Carney at Wednesday's WH briefing. So there you have it. The unemployed create jobs. If only we had millions more unemployed, we could create millions more jobs, simply by giving the unemployed more money.
Carney responded: "Oh, uh, it is by, uh, I would expect a reporter from the Wall Street Journal would know this as part of the entrance exam."
"There are few other ways that can directly put money into the economy than applying unemployment insurance," Carney said.
Carney answers the question: "It is one of the most direct ways to infuse money directly into the economy because people who are unemployed and obviously aren't running a paycheck are going to spend the money that they get. They're not going to save it, they're going to spend it. And with unemployment insurance, that way, the money goes directly back into the economy, dollar for dollar virtually."
"Every place that, that money is spent has added business and that creates growth and income for businesses that leads them to decisions about jobs, more hiring. So, there are few other ways that can directly put money into the economy than applying unemployment insurance, Carney said.
“Even when we unemploy him, he still gets his salary for life, unless he is impeached and convicted.”
True, but he loses many of the perks of office and immediate public exposure he has become accustomed to. There’s also a stigma to being a one termer. I personally want to see him in a group of other presidents (that occasionally comes together from time to time in the oval office for a photo op) where he is reduced to being just another former president, and a failed, short term one at that. I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if the narcissist did not show up at events like this.
Perpetual Motion doesn't work.....
.....Neither does "Perpetual Economics"

Maybe someone could make some appropriate modifications to this one. It sorta suggests one right off the bat...
“they scramble to spend it all”
Yep. If you don’t spend every penny this year, you must not have needed it all so we’ll give it to another department that has a proven track record of consistently obligating its (ever expanding) entire budget. And we’ll reduce your budget next year since it was more than you needed. Efficiently run departments soon learn that “no good deed shall go unpunished”. LOL.

“unemployment creates millions of jobs”
So, it's very simple to fix the economic crisis: put everyone out of work and on unemployment. Voila - MILLIONS of jobs!
From your mouth to God's ears!
Carney has the intellect of yogurt that expired 6 weeks ago...
Normal job process. Employer needs help in providing a service or product that is sold to produce money to pay the employee. Self sustaining process.
Obama job Process. Obama needs help in staying in office so he pays citizens to vote for him. To produce the money to pay for them he taxes other citizens.
Obama is right in the fact that people who rely on government handouts will not save money because they believe their source is endless. They in turn will spend all their money on stuff creating some jobs in the local area.
How much do these jobs cost the tax payer? Work is not being done by the recipient. Nothing of value is produced to be sold.
Why does this machine come to mind?
And it’s not just the bureaucracies. All of the outrage/whining NGOs are based on people having a hang nail and wanting someone else to clip it for them.
Community organizers stir up the unwashed every time they need a new ‘injustice’ to underwrite a raise, larger staff, new office etc.
Self-perpetuating and eternal until someone finally tells them no and makes it stick.
Actually, all unemployment payments do is prevent some jobs from disappearing. The guy who just lost his job is able to keep on spending, though probably at a lower rate than he was spending when he had a decent income from his job. This keeps people employed to serve his reduced needs, but not necessarily all the people who served his needs earlier. For instance, he might not take the fishing trip he would have taken when employed.
Furthermore, it’s been proven that paying people not to work keeps them from taking a new job. So, logically, unemployment payments reduce jobs directly, as well as modestly reduce jobs indirectly because of the recipient having reduced income to spend.
Carney is the one who needs to take an entrance exam for his job, not the WSJ reporter.
Thank you for the nice compliment on my post.
This issue illustrates one of the main fallacies of Marxism - it assumes human nature can “progress”, and thus be engineered to be some communal creature. But the survival instinct goes deep, and these social reengineering schemes are foiled by the self-preservation instinct of the reengineers.
Sounds like you may have read some F. A. Hayak along the way. :)
Yes so many jobs in fact that with 8 years experience and a double major in management and finance, a fellow like me has been out of work for 8 months.
Patronizing bastard!
White House Thinks Unemployment Creates Jobs
So by admission, using the perverted logic of these liberals, the Obamanation’s goal must be 100% unemployment. Makes perfect sense to me.
Create dependency. A person who is independent is considered a threat to society (those in charge). If you are dependent on others for your well being, you are less likely to rock the boat and question when something is not right.
Well, Jay, if unemployment benefits create jobs, then I think you’ve found the magic formula to save Obama’s presidency, namely, double the amount of benefits paid to each person, extend the benefits forever, and increase eligibility to everyone who isn’t currently employed. That should really get the economy humming, hey?
His statement about the effects of unemployment payments, however, reflects either economic ignorance or deliberate duplicity by the Administration in promoting a redistributionist agenda.
Perhaps his "entrance exam" should require him to trace the dollars which go into the pockets of unemployed workers back to their real source.
Carney's Keynesian view overlooks the fact that what is commonly referred to as "government" is an entity which has no money except that which it borrows or prints from thin air, or coercively takes from citizens.
That which it borrows is called "debt." That which it prints creates "inflation," another form of taxation. That which it coercively takes from citizens and "redistributes" causes the size of the economic pie citizens create through their private sector activities to be consumed by those who had no part in making it and wasted in the process by all the government bureaucrats who get their huge slice "administering" the redistribution.
Carney's position is inconsistent with the principles of liberty underlying the U. S. Constitution whose framers intended it to limit elected and appointed officials in government and free "the People" to create wealth as they went about in their "pursuit of Happiness."
Which idea has allowed nations to offer the greatest amount of freedom for individuals, individual opportunity, productivity, and plenty? Is it the "redistributionist" idea which requires that some imperfect people in positions of power in government decide who gets to operate a business, who gets to win and lose, who gets to keep the fruits of their labors, etc., etc., or is it the nation whose written Constitution recognized that "freedom of individual enterprise," unemcumbered by a political elite, produces better results?
The following cartoon, produced a few decades ago, illustrates part of the dilemma America faces today--except today's situation is even worse than in the 80's.
Carney also might contrast the ideas of Thomas Jefferson with those of his boss:
"To preserve [the] independence [of the people,] we must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt. We must make our election between economy and liberty, or profusion and servitude. If we run into such debts as that we must be taxed in our meat and in our drink, in our necessaries and our comforts, in our labors and our amusements, for our callings and our creeds, as the people of England are, our people, like them, must come to labor sixteen hours in the twenty-four, give the earnings of fifteen of these to the government for their debts and daily expenses, and the sixteenth being insufficient to afford us bread, we must live, as they now do, on oatmeal and potatoes, have no time to think, no means of calling the mismanagers to account, but be glad to obtain subsistence by hiring ourselves to rivet their chains on the necks of our fellow-sufferers." --Thomas Jefferson to Samuel Kercheval, 1816. ME 15:39
"I deem [this one of] the essential principles of our government and consequently [one] which ought to shape its administration:... The honest payment of our debts and sacred preservation of the public faith." --Thomas Jefferson: 1st Inaugural, 1801. ME 3:322
"I sincerely believe... that the principle of spending money to be paid by posterity under the name of funding is but swindling futurity on a large scale." --Thomas Jefferson to John Taylor, 1816. ME 15:23
"[With the decline of society] begins, indeed, the bellum omnium in omnia [war of all against all], which some philosophers observing to be so general in this world, have mistaken it for the natural, instead of the abusive state of man. And the fore horse of this frightful team is public debt. Taxation follows that, and in its train wretchedness and oppression." --Thomas Jefferson to Samuel Kercheval, 1816. ME 15:40
I agree. With ten per cent unemployment for almost three years now and 99 weeks of unemployment insurance we should be all rollin’ in dough, business booming, catfish jumpin’ and the cotton is high and everybody living fat ‘n’ sassy. These Dems are nuts. This is what happens when old hippies are elected to office. Pelosi is still tripping.
In the same way that social security was created to encourage people to retire lol
