Speaker Boehner Announces Appointments to Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction
Washington (Aug 10)
House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) today announced his intent to appoint the following three lawmakers to represent House Republicans on the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction:
House Republican Conference Chairman Jeb Hensarling (R-TX)
House Ways & Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp (R-MI)
House Energy & Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI)
Speaker Boehner has tapped Chairman Hensarling to serve as a co-chair of the joint select committee. Boehner issued the following statement regarding the appointments of Chairmen Hensarling, Camp, and Upton:
Our debt and deficits are a threat to our economy, and America cannot achieve long-term job growth until we take action to address this crisis. In the weeks ahead, a serious, bipartisan committee of lawmakers will begin the hard but necessary work of making the tough choices needed to rein in mandatory and entitlement spending, which are the drivers of our debt. The lawmakers I have appointed to serve on this joint committee are proven leaders who have earned the trust and confidence of their colleagues and constituents. They understand the gravity of our debt crisis and I appreciate their willingness to serve on this panel.
The two parties have fundamental differences about government and its proper role in our society. Where we've been able to agree, we have acted, and in a way consistent with the American peoples desire for a smaller, less costly, and more accountable government. Still, the differences remain, and so does the urgent work of returning our economy to creating jobs and lifting the crushing burden of debt that threatens our childrens future. This joint committee presents an opportunity for both parties to bring to the table their best ideas, debate them on the merits, and ultimately come together to do whats best for our country. With all thats at stake, I expect that the joint select committee will conduct its work in the open and transparent manner the American people deserve.
Upton's faced primaries a few times. Jack Hoogendyk gave him a race in 2010. I hope he tries again. Jack's a good guy and a former state rep.
If I expected this panel to accomplish anything I might care but since I don’t I won’t.
Come on, Patty Murray? Reid knows there will be nothing accomplished with her on this panel. It is set up to fail.
Obama is already threatening an end run around this Super Panel by repealing the Bush tax cuts. He knows tax increases are dead.
I mean it you want something to happen you don’t put in that brain-dead harpy.
Jack Hoogendyk tried to beat Upton in 2010. I’d like to see him try again. The new district has northern Allegan County as well, which is the heart of Dutch Country.
The constitution does not allow Congress to form a committee whose recommendations cannot be debated or amended, but must be either passed or rejected and rejection triggers across the board cuts that also cannot be debated or amended.
This is not like past commissions like Simpson Bowles from last year or Bush’s Tax Reform Commission that simply made recommendations. If this committee’s recommendations are not approved, congress is forced to accept something else.
Its real simple. The committee makes recommendations that the two Houses can either independently choose to ignore, pass, reject or modify. Nothing unconstitutional there.
Last week the three branches passed into law a conditional/delayed set of budget cuts, nothing unconstitutional there.
Any congress can pass a law getting rid of the cuts or changing them, nothing unconstitutional there
It is perfectly constitional because it doesnt force or stop the congress from doing anything. Dont like the cuts?? That is why we get a vote.
Here's the most common use of those words you cite above that I have observed:
Socialist : ‘ A Democrat ’
Communist: ‘ A Democrat that says that Obama is too conservative or is a conservative ’
RINO :’ A Republican we strongly disagree with or don't like ’
Unconstitutional :’ A law we don't like ’
Illegal :’A poor Mexican or from similar country in America that is here illegally or was born here to a mother that is here illegally’
There is a strong correlation.
Another very abused word on FR is “populist” (thanks to Limbaugh).
Boehner should’ve considered bringing McCotter in.
Actually I totally agree with you, except I am concerned that the Dems on the committee will conspire with the RINOs McConnell and Boehner put up to control the committees and end the Bush Tax cuts, and impose taxes on small businesses and corporations which will drive more American jobs overseas.
More tax money is to government as cocaine is to an addict. IOt just feeds and encourages a habit with no limits or bounds.
Another thing about this committee which worries me is it may move on to OTHER issues and try to get OTHER types of Statist Legislation approved.
Thanks a million, Darren! It was such a pleasure to read Jack Hoogendyk's blog and bio. He's one of the many millions of Americans who are going to turn this country around from the foul-smelling abyss that Barky and his pals have tried their utmost to take us down.
As he has impressed me so far as a bright guy, I find the story completely believable. The ‘committee’ appears to have only two possible outcomes - fail or sell us down the river. (Well I guess three possible outcomes since I would never put it past the politicians to find a way to do both.)
Exactly. We aren't helped by claiming unconstitutionality when it's not warranted. Opposing the bill on it's merits will do just fine.
