Speaker Boehner Announces Appointments to Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction
Washington (Aug 10)
House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) today announced his intent to appoint the following three lawmakers to represent House Republicans on the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction:
House Republican Conference Chairman Jeb Hensarling (R-TX)
House Ways & Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp (R-MI)
House Energy & Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI)
Speaker Boehner has tapped Chairman Hensarling to serve as a co-chair of the joint select committee. Boehner issued the following statement regarding the appointments of Chairmen Hensarling, Camp, and Upton:
Our debt and deficits are a threat to our economy, and America cannot achieve long-term job growth until we take action to address this crisis. In the weeks ahead, a serious, bipartisan committee of lawmakers will begin the hard but necessary work of making the tough choices needed to rein in mandatory and entitlement spending, which are the drivers of our debt. The lawmakers I have appointed to serve on this joint committee are proven leaders who have earned the trust and confidence of their colleagues and constituents. They understand the gravity of our debt crisis and I appreciate their willingness to serve on this panel.
The two parties have fundamental differences about government and its proper role in our society. Where we've been able to agree, we have acted, and in a way consistent with the American peoples desire for a smaller, less costly, and more accountable government. Still, the differences remain, and so does the urgent work of returning our economy to creating jobs and lifting the crushing burden of debt that threatens our childrens future. This joint committee presents an opportunity for both parties to bring to the table their best ideas, debate them on the merits, and ultimately come together to do whats best for our country. With all thats at stake, I expect that the joint select committee will conduct its work in the open and transparent manner the American people deserve.
“Glaringly missing is any Tea Party freshmen....”
Can’t have any of those “DIVISIVE PEOPLE!” screwing up a good clusterf—k, can we?
Not so sure. Didn’t Upton give us the light bulb bill?
Boehner is a bonehead! Upton is the architect of the lightbulb ban! RINO will cave!
Ryan isn’t on the committee because he’s become the face of mediscaring by the Democrats.
Second, aside from the man being a good talker, why do people here want him on this committee? He folded swift on the conservative house proposal. Supported Boehner’s deal, supported Tarp. I’m so tired of people falling in love with politicians for talking tough or coming across like an “intellectual”. If they hold firm in opposition alright I can respect that. If they WIN like Walker is in Wisconsin or Christie has in NJ okay. But this guy folds cheap and has no victories for us.
People should be complaining that Jordan and the other 22 who opposed that debt deal didn’t fill ut this committee. Not tht I’d expect them to since Boehner chose it but those are the ones we should want here.
Upton???? The guy hates conservatives and loves government. The fix is in...he’ll ‘reach across the aisle’. Bet on it.
Except we don’t have any actual evidence that he ever ASKED to be on the committee. Only someone’s recollection of that.
Look for the quotes. He said he would serve if he was asked — that’s not the same as asking to be put on the committee.
I’ve found no quote anywhere of him saying he WANTED to serve; no quote from the Cavuto show is transcripted yet that says that either.
Since Ryan also said a few days ago that he doesn’t hold out high hopes for the committee, it seems consistant that he didn’t want to be on the committee and would rather keep doing his job where he is.
I find Upton’s actual voting record to be far more persuasive than either you parroting his biography or any anonymous blog poster. Thanks for playing though.
SO, just Pelosi left. I don’t envy her job, she has to figure out how to represent 10 special interest groups with only three picks.
And yet you wonder why the Progressive Left kicks your political butt time after time
Dysfunctioning as intended.
When they created this Politboro, did anyone seriously think that representatives of the people were going to be on it? The only one worth even half a damn is Toomey.
No matter how ‘conservative’ the Republican members are, this committee is designed to end up offering congress a Hobson’s Choice of raising taxes or slashing the defense budget. It also allows the RINO Speaker, John Boehner, and RINO members of congress to escape accountability for wanting to do both. They can all ‘blame’ the committee and raise our taxes or make deep cuts in the DOD budget. Both options are anathema to TEA Party members so the committee is an end-run around them, although any bill raising taxes will probably not make it through the House. The whole thing is just another Washington dog & pony show, designed to keep the spending scam going while protecting congressional politicians lifetime jobs.
Does Boehner get to choose the Senators too? I bet not.
We’re screwed no matter what.
Thanks. I read that later in the thread. Mack would have been a good choice.
It sounds like Upton loves environmental regs. That can’t be good.
Garbage in garbage out!! If Upton is the light bulb guy this is a complete sellout!! He could have and should have chosen the likes of Paul Ryan, Ron Paul, Eric Cantor, not to mention many other Pubbies with the cajones to make conservative positions. Hopefully after the next election Boehner is history. This guys enjoys getting scammed by the Rats and the thugs in the White House.
I wish I had a career where I could simply ‘appoint’ a blue-ribbon panel to take care of the undesireable parts of the job. And the customers end up paying the bill!
Amazing that they get away with it.
Ryan is smart not to be on this committee. It's gonna be a Donnybrook, then ignored, and maybe fall people (can't say 'fall guy', not PC).
Anyway, as someone said earlier, the only light at the end of the tunnel is muzzle flash.
When idiots like you advocate for having them on our own side, it's no wonder.
I’m surprised he didn’t pick Senator John McCain to stand between the leftists and the military budget.
