Republicans Maintain Control Of Senate 2 Democrats Face Recall Elections Next Week August 9, 2011

MADISON, Wis. -- Republicans will stay in control of the state Senate after surviving recall challenges Tuesday. Republicans on Tuesday successfully defended four seats in recall elections, and Democrats picked two seats.

The Republican state senators who were targets of the recalls were Sens. Luther Olsen, Robert Cowles, Alberta Darling, Sheila Harsdorf, Dan Kapanke and Randy Hopper. While Olsen, Cowel and Harsdorf were victorious and kept their seats, Kapanke and Hopper lost to their Democratic challengers.

Hopper was defeated by Democrat Jessica King in the 18th District while Kapanke of La Crosse lost to Democrat Jennifer Shilling in the 32nd District.

Democrats needed to win the final race -- the 8th Senate District race between Republican incumbent Sen. Alberta Darling versus Democratic state Rep. Sandy Pasch -- to be in position to wrest control of the Senate from the Republicans.

But with 96 percent of the vote in, WISC-TV is calling District 8 for Darling. That means the Democrats won't be in a position to get a majority in the chamber.

Two Democrats, Sens. Jim Holperin and Bob Wirch, face recalls next week on Aug. 16. One Democratic incumbent, state Sen. Dave Hansen, won his recall election last month.

Democrats were hoping to recapture control of the Senate in a political fight that's attracted millions of dollars in spending by national unions and other outside groups. The recall elections Tuesday target incumbent Republicans and stem from anger over Gov. Scott Walker's collective bargaining proposal that attracted throngs of protesters to the state Capitol. Walker's proposal took away most union rights from nearly all public workers.

I wonder if all the money the democrats spent in the state to buy this election will help their economy, and therefore Walker.

Could help in the Democrat recalls, if the Democrats stay home.

Democrats didn’t respect the results of the 2006 election. What makes anyone think that they’ll respect the results of of this one?

Good question. The real economic winners are the television stations. They love elections. No one profits more than they do. It is no wonder that they spin left when the rest of the country leans right...it encourages money in their pockets.

Make sure if you have friends in those two districts to vote for Kim Simac in Senate District 12 or Jonathan Steitz in Senate District 22 next Tuesday

Many of those dollars are/were mine.

And the union bosses have made it virtually impossible to prevent them from getting their hands on it.

When you look at the number of votes and the amount that the Rats spent..it was a very expensive loss for them. I guess they got the money from the Unions to do it, but it must hurt.

Congrats to Wisconsin, though.

Labor unions spent $30 million and they won one seat in a blue district and one seat where the guy was enmeshed in an adultery scandal and only won by 162 votes the last election.

They still don't have control of the Senate. Their power base within Wisconsin is permanently weakened.

Great night for the GOP!!!

But the best part is, the GOP might be back in 2012 because of redistricting ... so this WHOLE thing could just be a big waste of time and $$$ for the Rats ...
