Re your linked article in The American Interest, the liberals are getting it stuck to them by commenters down the page ..... the writer and his early commenters are libs interested in keeping the Great Society political calculus going as far as possible, while conceding that demographic change is making this less likely.

Other commenters cannot find their brooms fast enough to suit them. I would wager most of them are potential and quite likely future Palin/Bachmann/Cain supporters, once the campaign gets underway.

The next conservative President will have the very unenviable task of cleaning the Augean Stables left behind by FDR, LBJ, Slick Willie, and Obozo. It's going to be a back-breaker, and the media will be carping all the way.

It's interesting that the writer of your linked article does not blink at, but quickly acknowledges, liberal media bias in handling stories like this one -- while asserting good motives (such as were on display in the Matthew Shepard case? Oh, please!).

You failed to mention Hoover, Nixon, Ford, and GW, who left behind heaps of dung also. "Republican" is not a synonym for "conservative." I wish it were so, but too many Republicans are big spenders and lovers of government power.

BTW, do you see a Hercules in the bunch of announced candidates? Maybe Bachmann, but she will be destroyed by the media and the elites in both parties before she is elected potus.
