The path to a debt deal took too long and was too divisive, and lawmakers must now work together to strengthen the country's fiscal position and spur growth, White House spokesman Jay Carney said on Saturday.
"It is important that our elected leaders come together to strengthen our economy and put our nation on a stronger fiscal footing," Carney said in a statement a day after ratings agency Standard & Poor's downgraded the United States' credit rating for the first time.
The White House said the deal to cut spending and raise the debt ceiling, sealed with the nation near default after months of fractious negotiations between the Obama administration and Congress, was "an important step in the right direction."
"Yet the path to getting there took too long and was at times too divisive," Carney said. "We must do better to make clear our nation's will, capacity and commitment to work together to tackle our major fiscal and economic challenges."

Stop and think for a moment.
Certainlythere are 300 million people her and any one of them can lie, but have you ever seen a man more adept at not telling the truth?
Carney is perfect for the job. The job entails lying for Obama. Like Baghdad Bob we havent gotten a truth from this little feminie POS since day one.
We should name him Jag-off Jay.
All of these tv people are saying “well the American people are fed up with the fact that congress can’t get it done” etc.. or some variation of that. Are these people that stupid or is that the narrative now? Blame the entire Congress for the failure of this administration? The Senate is controlled by Democrats, the White House is Democrat. If this same scanario were reversed and conservatives held the Senate and the Whitehouse then the narrative would be “look how bad they are. They have 2/3’s and can’t get anything done.”
You see, no matter what the situation and what cards the republicans have in their hand they will always play into the narrative that is defined for them by the media.
CCB would have made the necessary cuts to avoid the downgrade. The Dems tabled it. That would or should be the only response from the Republicans going forward. Then, make this next election ABOUT this. That way, Obama has not put this behind him through the next election.(As Donald Trump says he has)
BTW- I have serious suspicions that the Whitehouse may have wanted the S&P downgrade in order to try and force raising taxes. Sure is funny how S&P put it out there at 7pm on a Friday JUST LIKE how the Whitehouse has always put stuff out there.
“Certainlythere are 300 million people her and any one of them can lie, but have you ever seen a man more adept at not telling the truth?”
The congressman (Joe Wilson) who shouted out “you lie” was simply stating the truth. Obama’s inveterate lying is facilitated by the enablers in the corrupt MSM who won’t dare question the accuracy, truth or contradictions in his lies.
When “we” left office? Funny wording. Are you a Clintonoid?
Those are good facts. But you forget that Clinton had a responsible Republican House who forced Clinton to the right of center. Had “you” had the Pelosie House, HillaryCare would have passed. ; )
Can’t get more “divisive” than the battle between those who would destroy the nation tomorrow if given half a chance (Dems); those who would delay our destruction by 10 years at best (RINOs); and those would would save our Constitutional Republic (Tea Party).
This nation cannot survive with all of the imbeciles that don’t pay Federal income taxes voting for marxists and con men.
No way to put that horse back in the barn without starting from scratch.
The only way to begin to reverse this is to call out the marxists in Congress and the press by name and harass, investigate, and where justified, imprison them.
Zero tolerance for marxism in US Government, make it part of the oath of office.
Make deficit spending and voting for deficit spending a CRIME except in case of war declared by Congress.
Make voter fraud a crime punishable by a minimum sentence of 25 to life.
Make all voters re-register to vote under strict controls.
Repeal the 15th Amendment,19th Amendment,23rd Amendment,24th Amendment,26th Amendment,Voting Rights Act,National Voter Registration Act, and Help America Vote Act, or nullify them via legislation or Executive Order.
The US credit rating will go right up.
Carney’s statement is (.)bama’s attempt to through Congress under the bus as if he was above the fray.
When you have an IdiotPOTUS coming on my TV every 48 hours claiming he wanted a “grand bargain” but then playing partisan politics, one has not got to wonder why there was divisiveness. =.=
Obama personally negotiated in bad faith. The Republicans presented a budget and a CCB bill to the Senate either of which would have avoided the downgrading of America's credit rating. The Senate took no action on either.
The Democrats own this one. The Democrats' opening position was for a two year debt limit increase with no cuts.
Well Mr Carney, Marxism isn’t a good place to start your defense. Might as well nominate Kim Jung Ill to the Supreme Court and see if that gets divisiveness as well. dickhead
” “We must do better to make clear our nation’s will, capacity and commitment to work together to tackle our major fiscal and economic challenges.””
Then why in hell doesn’t that poser in the WH listen to the people as he is supposed to and quit his unilateral, unconstitutional illegal deals to the unions, and his other special interest criminal enterprises, e.g., Acorn or whatever name it is maligning now.
FUBO! You are divisive and need to resign. You stupid POS!
If the Rats would have agreed to Cut, Cap, and Balance this wouldn’t have happened!
Take a look at who controlled Congress during those time periods!
Here’s an idea. Spend less. Micromanage less. Keep taxes down. Work together towards this important goal.
No, it was a typo. Please compare this to the rest of what I posted.
But you forget that Clinton had a responsible Republican House who forced Clinton to the right of center.
The same Republican controlled House totally blew the budget when Bush was elected.
67% does not equal 97%.
The down grade is based on a long term trajectory. I do not support deficit spending, but the Bush trajectory is NOTHING compared to the Obama trajectory which is why S&P downgraded the US.
It annoys me when everyone beats up on deficit spending of Reagan, Bush 1 and Bush 2. All of our entitlement spending was non-funded. This entitlement spending started under FDR.
