Gossip and unauthorized leaks from U.S. officials, politicians and retired military officers about the highly classified raid to kill Osama bin Laden have jeopardized the ability of special forces to carry out similar operations in the future, said Defense Secretary Robert Gates.

"Too many people in too many places are talking too much about this operation," Gates said, adding that the level of disclosures and blabbing violates an agreement reached in the White House Situation Room on May 8 to keep details of the raid private.

"That lasted about 15 hours," Gates said sourly.

The cascade of details surfacing about the highly classified event makes similar operations in the future "that much more difficult and riskier," Gates told reporters at a Pentagon briefing Wednesday.

"It is time to stop talking," agreed Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In a pointed directive to officials, politicians and the retired military officers often featured on cable news programs, he added, "Get off the net."

Members of the Navy SEAL team that tore into bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan and killed the 9/11 mastermind had expressed concern to Gates about the safety of their families after the team had been identified publicly and officials from the White House, the Pentagon and Congress widely discussed the operation.

The leaks were possibly an attempt to get us to believe that what Obama told us had happened actually did.

The whole country is put at risk when you have a pathological liar/forger as your leader, because people need to have everything proven to them - which jeopardizes people who need to have the details secret. In order for some things to work you have to be able to TRUST, but that is impossible when the entire system has lied and broken laws in order to cover for an illegal (probably Kenyan) usurper.

There is nobody we can trust, and the politicians don’t comprehend what an impossible situation that places us all in. When the crooks control Congress, the White HOuse, all the regulatory agencies, law enforcement, the courts, the schools, the science community, and the media... there is no way for a country to survive. When will people realize that the infected, pus-filled abscess will kill a person if it is not removed? Unless we clean up the corruption so that the process can be trusted, we can only expect the good to die as a consequence of the conniving, traitorous bad holding all the power.

Every politician who poo-poohed the need for the rule of law as it related to Obama’s eligibility needs to answer for the details that have to be leaked just to try to convince the public that the lying, forging pretender in the White House is actually telling the truth on something for once. Let those politicians explain to the families of these SEALS that trust is such an insignificant, frivolous thing.

Good heavens. The families haven't even been notified, but "anonymous" officials are yapping this all over the place. People need to be fired.

That’s the worst of all. Robert Gates is a good man. He must be positively sick at this.

But we never try anyone for treason anymore not even a freking reprimand!!!!!! They don’t take security seriously.

I remember Caspar Weinberger...I can’t remember which spy/s it was caught on his watch but I remember him saying that they should face a firing squad.
