Sane society cannot be treated as a game of who’s the biggest bully, that’s for sure, but being aimless, waffling, unassertive suckers with nothing worth fighting to protect is no prize either.
Why didn't he open his doors and invite a bunch of the thugs in, take them back to his house, and have a discussion with them about their troubles. And when that was over, he could let them take everything they could carry from his house (reparations, ya know) and he would drive them home. Then next weekend, he and his wife would go to their neighborhood for a cookout.
IMO, the parts about feeling “sad” and wanting to cuddle the kid were embellishments meant to reestablish his PC cred for even thinking about rolling up his window.

It's a very serious mental disease and, though in some cases curable, in most cases it can't be touched, even with the largest doses of evidence and reality to the contrary.
