The Incredible Shrinking Tea Party
By Greg Sargent I f theres one thing the debt ceiling battle revealed, its that the Tea Party continues to enjoy outsized influence in Washington in general and over the GOP in particular.
So its interesting to note that according to the internals of todays New York Times poll, the Tea Party is rapidly shrinking before our very eyes, and is hemorraging supporters at a surprising rate:
Do you consider yourself to be a supporter of the Tea Party movement, or not?
Yes 18 No 73
The 18 percent who self-identify as Tea Party supporters is at its lowest point, tying the 18 percent who supported it way back in April of 2010, when it was first gaining steam as the Congressional races of last cycle began heating up. The trajectory is interesting: The Times poll shows the Tea Party has had some ups and downs, but it steadily gained supporters as the 2010 campaigns wore on, and peaked with 31 percent of the electorate saying they supported the movement at around the time that the GOP won its massive 2010 victory.
Then its support began to decline, and it then dropped a precipitous eight points from June until today a period that roughly coincided with the debt ceiling debate, which showcased Tea Party intransigence and self-delusion at its finest. Not only that, but right now, the 73 percent who say they are not supporters is at its highest point ever.
Whats more, as Steve Benen notes, the numbers who disaprove of the Tea Party and who think it has too much influence over the GOP are running as high as ever.
Interestingly, the Tea Party is declining in public support even as its influence in Washington has, if anything, peaked.

Having 18% of voters who are active and dedicated is a huge voting block.
They wish. We have not yet begun to fight!!
Rebellion is brewing!!
Although the MSM has done a very good job of trashing our brand name, most of America agrees with us on the issues.
This poll is unadulterated propaganda. Its purpose is to mold opinion and not to reflect opinion about the size of the Tea Party. The only poll that matters to date occurred in Nov. 2010. The next poll that matters will be taken in Nov. 2012.
I wouldn’t believe anything written by the NY Pravda or its Washington Post subsidiary.
WaPo should know all about “shrinking”.
Poll the Tea Party's issues, and the public overwhelmingly supports them.
Well, gee, in NY how many would buy the Times if it said the Tea Party was doing great;)

I’m not, but I’m too tired to argue with them tonight, so I just threw my quick point out. No matter what they claim the tea party voters are a huge voting block in an election, the kind of thing that strikes fear in politician’s hearts.
Shrinkage....wapo revenues down 50%
WaPo writer spinning a NYTimes poll- it’s all in the family ...
Here’s the way it went down. For over two years the NYT and the WAPOST and all of the LSM did Obama and the Dems bidding by trying to convince the public that the tea party was the rebirth of the racist clan on steroids. And, more recently, we were labeled “terrorists.” Then they take a poll and ask their readers if they consider themselves part of the racist, terrorist tea party. Well, hell, NO! I’m no racist! No terrorist! Patooie on that!
” Having 18% of voters who are active and dedicated is a huge voting block.”
Don’t forget “independents” ,Ansel.....supposedly, 2 out of 3 are done with the Obammunist : )
I sure as hell hope so!
The retread troll has been zotted again. He’ll be back.
Hey Greggie! Shut the hell up. We’re just regrouping and reloading there dumbass! And you know what you can do with your fixed New Yawk Slimes “poll”.
Everything Barack 'Jackwagon' Hussein and his socialists do only grows the party more.
Tea Party USA - Modern Day Paul Reveres - Growing by the day!
I assumed he was a Troll and told him I wasn’t falling for his nonsense and not to contact me again. The Troll idiots must think they will influence us.
That’s an awesome map. Thanks for sharing, BobP.
