Among Those It Would Help, Doubts That a Plan Can Tame Inequality in New York
New York Times ^ | ADRIANE QUINLAN | ADRIANE QUINLAN

The problems that face young black and Latino men in New York City are deep-seated and diverse, officials who work in minority neighborhoods say. They vary not only from neighborhood to neighborhood, but also from family to family and man to man.

So when Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg announced on Thursday a $130 million plan to help young black and Latino men find jobs, raise families and stay out of trouble, those men — and the mentors who would help them — were tentatively happy, but raised some questions.

“I’m glad to see somebody’s actually mentioning the words ‘young men’ and ‘color’ in the same sentence as ‘funding,’ ” said Danny R. Peralta, director for arts and education at The Point Community Development Corporation in the Bronx.

Still, Mr. Peralta worried that the money would just graze the surface of the problem. “If you can’t wake up in the morning to some food or if you can’t get some counseling for whatever traumas you’ve been experiencing,” he said, “it is not going to reach you.”

Lee Cabrera, 23, holding his son as he looked out on a courtyard in the Harlem River Houses development, said, “There are a lot of homeless kids out there right now.” With three children under 6 and a fourth on the way, Mr. Cabrera said looking for a job was the last thing on his mind. Would Mr. Bloomberg’s plan help him raise his family?

Young fathers like Mr. Cabrera face the double challenge of supporting themselves and creating an environment that keeps their children out of trouble.

Looking for a job should be the first thing he does, not the last - Right after his vasectomy.

Yep, it’s amazing how we have institutionalized the “baby mama” culture of single motherhood.

About 70% of black babies are born to unmarried mothers, but due to political correctness, we’re not supposed to say anything. Instead we’re flummoxed as a society at the multitudes of problems related to particular groups of people. I’m not referring to race/ethnicity so much as the fact that critical masses of kids aren’t being raised properly. And that ties in with the baby mamas not having the baby daddy being a real father to the kids.

But we have to be politically correct. We have to talk about how certain people are grappling with poverty, or the problems of living in section 8 housing, rather than talk about the huge negative impact the lack of a father has on these children.

Why doesn’t the New York Times allow comments on their stories at their site?

HEY, asshole, try WORKING for once in your life, and stop the generation after generation of Freebie-riders. Lay off the drugs, too, that you trade food stamps for, or Debit Card Welfare payments.....

Election year army for these two vermin. One day Obama will make a Mugabe like speech which will destroy what is left of our institutions legitimacy and these two vermin will be there to pick it all up on the cheap. These two are war criminals.

1) Eliminate the marriage penalty.
2) Stop subsidizing any and all pregnancies, married or otherwise.
3) Starting in Kindergarten, teach Phonics Reading, Penmanship, regular table math, and American History (not “Black History”).
4) Keep teaching these through K-12.
5) Punish bad behavior.
6) All courses must be taught by someone who has a degree in that subject.
7) Membership in a church should be encouraged.

Good grief! We've already funded trillions down that sinkhole since Johnson declared the War on Poverty back in the ‘60’s. A few months ago a report showed that poverty has actually increased in the intervening decades. So how ‘bout this for an idea. Do away with the minimum wage so inexperienced workers can get on the job training and experience which might justify paying them $7.25 an hour. As it stands now, all the minorities can say is: Well, if I had a job, I'd be making $7.25 an hour. Look at the data. Every time the minimum wage increases, unemployment rates for young minority workers rises...the very group the misguided gov’t policy is trying to help. If raising the minimum wage to $7.25 is such a good idea, clearly raising it to $100/hour is even better, right?

Actually, the government PAYS these people to have fatherless families. It PAYS them to have lots of children without getting married. It PAYS them not to work.

So, yes, everyone is responsible for his own choices in life. But ever since LBJ’s Great Society, the government strongly encourages them to make the wrong choices.

The government gets them on the welfare plantation for life—and for their childrens’ and their childrens’ childrens’ lives. And then they get their votes.

And the Republicans go along with it so they can have a share of all that Democrat pork.

We already spend $15,000 a year on their union/government-school educations, after which they still can’t read, but it’s still our fault and we still owe them more.

It is amazing how obvious it is that the black guy with 3 children and another on the way IS the problem
but even more amazing that the NYT would print that info.
did anyone from the NYT read the article and think, “ hmm maybve we should try to make a victim of a man who has 3 kids, another on the ay but NO JOB?

Reality is he doesn’t need a job, the mother and kids collect enough in freebies from us to have a decent standard of living.
Wnat to bet they have cable and we know they have cell phones

The best thing these young men can do is to leave the state, in typical economic structural change fashion - go west young man.

Someone needs to say to them:

“Just pick up and go to any state that has a much lower unemployment rate and take any job you can get.”

“Just leave the Liberal-created ghettos.”

“The only thing the Liberals can or will do for you is to help get you on some form of permanent government dependency.”

“JUST LEAVE.”

Well, you know what I mean . . . A degree in English would probably help immensely in both handwriting and reading.

As it stands now, you have many highly unskilled teachers teaching subjects they know nothing about.

The govt is going to fund a program that will try to alter Puerto Rican’s perception of masculinity? How racist and condescending.

This is like bizarro world. IF your parents moved to NY from Puerto Rico for opportunities, then why can’t the next generation move from NY to Texas?
