"We've had too much talk the last few days of Republicans as early as this morning, Republican leaders in the Senate saying there will be no revenue. That's not going to happen. Otherwise, the trigger is going to kick in. The only way we can arrive at a fair arrangement for the American people with this joint committee is to have equal sharing. It's going to be painful. Each party if they do the right thing, it's going to be painful for them because to be fair, we have to move forward. There has to be equal spending cuts, there has to be some revenue that matches that," Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) said on the floor of the Senate right before voting started on the debt deal. Increased revenue from taxes was not included in the debt compromise.

Were you thinking of a different Constitution?
Facts don't matter to people who really love to get their knickers in a twist on at least an hourly basis.
Our friends have a house cleaner that comes once a week in her brand new Mercedes. I strongly doubt she declares her income.
Try NONE OF THE ABOVE. I am so sick of the Republican bashing that goes on here.
“Why do they assume tax increases will result in higher revenue?”
They never make that assumption. They want tax increases until they finally hit the magic 100% tax rate. Then the people are enslaved but at least we have the beneficent government taking care of all of our needs.
The trap..Invisible to the Pubies! Don’t ya just luv it! NOT!
I think the problem is if cuts are made 50% of the cuts must come from defense. It is not across the board. If they really wanted to cut across the board then all they had to do was freeze budgets at last years level. We can never get ahead of these guys as long as there is baseline budgeting.
The Pubies DO have another avenue with the appropriations bills and failing that with the CR. Put their next stand in the CR for 3 months only (until end of Dec). The Demons can either go with a conservative fiscal position or shut down the government come 1 October. Then again on 1 January if they insist on tax increases. The Pubies STILL have leverage.
The GOP needs to put six highly articulate members on this committee because they will have a guaranteed platform on tv into the election season. Rubio, Ryan, Lee, Ron Johnson, etc. If McConnell and Boehner put a bunch of wimps or wonks, or tax raisers, they may well both be sitting in minority leader offices in Jan 2012. This bill has good and bad, but the bad is mostly in how this idiotic supercommitee ends up going. We can win in the end if that part of it goes well.
You're right. I forgot to add option e) Co-conspirators.
Years ago we briefly had a cleaning person who insisted on being paid in cash. Did not take us long to figure out she was collecting welfare, medicaid, etc despite having four days a week work.
He needs to read the bil. That’s just not true.
The Dems will try to make the commission raise taxes because they failed to get taxes raised this time, but there is no requirement for that.
Regardless, that commission better get going. We still need another 2-3 trillion in cuts ASAP.
you are either very naive or you work for the Federal government.
This bill does NOT cut any spending. Each year the debt goes up. Do you understand that the government will obligate the taxpayers to pay for the increased debt??
Do you understand that the government will resort to monetizing the debt (a hideous hidden tax of the worse kind)
Anyone claiming to be a conservative who believes this bill does anything to reduce spending is delusional. Any so called cuts are a total joke on the American people.
The power of the State increases greatly with this bill.
I hope you forgot the /sarc tag :) That's a good one :)
Actually, cuts in defense were inevitable, so this was a free giveaway. Obama is winding down our involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq whatever Congress says. You can’t believe that the Defense cuts wouldn’t be attached to that, like white on rice.
Yes. Pubbies win when the topic is spending. A government shutdown will be very popular. The Kenyan lizard dramatically lost demanding more taxes. Class warfare rhetoric sounds so yesterday.
All attempts to smear the Tea Party have failed. Let’s rock!
The government will monetize the debt. You don't consider that a tax? The power of the State will only increase with this bill.
Are we looking at the same Republican leadership?
“the trigger”
This is the new idiot word for the next few days, which all the news people are going to use.
It is going to replace “kick the can down the road.”
LOL! Are you serious?
My prediction for Senate Republican members: McCain, Snowe (or Collins) and Brown.
