FREEDOM, Calif--
Thousands of people on the Central Coast are fearing the worst. Social Security offices are being flooded with phone calls about the crisis and one woman is being asked to pay her bills early, before her checks stop coming.
Sarah Franklin lives in Freedom and on Friday morning she got a call from the manager at the apartment complex she lives at, asking for rent early. She said they're afraid she won't have money to pay it next week if she doesn't get her social security check.
"It's just really scary," she said. "I feel like such a baby for crying but the thing is, I'm not by myself, there's other people."
Franklin lives in the Pajaro Vista Apartments, a government funded complex that charges rent based on what you get in social security. Franklin gets about $970 in social security, so her rent is about $250 a month.
It's the end of the month and she's basically out of cash so hearing the complex wanted next months rent early was quite a shock.

My 90 year old Mother gets Social Security and she gets hers on the 3rd of the month.
Sure.
“She said they’re afraid she won’t have money to pay it next week if she doesn’t get her social security check.”
I guess she’ll just have to move in with the kids....or contact her state reps to see if they’re willing to help her.
The federal pot is dry now...in large part due to because of the tax and spending priorities of her generation (i.e., spending money they NEVER collected).
Thanks much - never heard that term before.

I live on the Central Coast. It has very liberal cities such as Santa Cruz, Carmel, etc. although our state senator is a Republican.
I’m not a native, I’m a North Carolinian, but I’m often dismayed at the complete dismissal of the whole state of California by FReepers. In geographic area, it’s predominantly conservative. Free Republic is based in Fresno, for goodness sakes.
The Central Coast can be quite beautiful, nice little towns with gorgeous views of the Pacific from up in the hills, Capitola, Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo, etcetera. I’ve often thought I’d enjoy living there.
It would appear the apartment “managers” aren’t just Dems, they’re Activist Dems trying to stampede the old folks into a letter-writing campaign. Notice the press has already talked to them.
This story is a dead giveaway: This is staged. Pure theater, and people are going to get hurt in the panic they’re trying to raise. A new low.
No, I'm not.
Those who started getting social security checks prior to 1997 get paid the first week of every month.
I started getting SS checks in 2006.
I didn’t include Santa Cruz even though many do. Up until about ten years ago I didn’t even mind that place, wacky old hippie town that it was and I suppose still is. But, something changed, hardened. It can be ugly at times there now, when it was once sort of gentle and fun, in a countercultural way, the big old boardwalk and amusement park on the oceanfront. Pity.
Landlords can’t ask for rent any earlier than the due date specified in the lease.
Of course. Democrats don’t believe in contract law...what was I thinking.
I agree. Also could be a shake down by the manager who is taking advantage of the situation. Manager may be shaking down other tenants as well and will deny any allegations against themselves if the tenants get their SS checks as usual. A person at the gym expressed worry about getting their SS check and I told them, among other factoids, that Obama lied every time he opened his mouth. Checks will be paid on time or Obama will face more retribution than he or his socialist/commie democrat party are prepared to deal with at this particular time. The media diligently and happily plays along and they will never retract or clarify the actual facts involved, they just keep facilitating the administration advance toward killing off this Republic.
I am not a fan of SS, but, if this woman really needs it, then, not giving it to her is DumBO’s decision, that, some less deserving agency, such as the EPA gets it, is a travesty.
I would rather see SS replaced with 401k type system where the private sector is strengthened, instead, at the mercy of the feds who only see it as a cash cow in their way.
These "Landlords" are Gummint employees. They can do stuff us peons can't do.
I suspect theO’s plan for SS is the death squads from his healthcare bill.
i will turn 70 on my next - Dec 11.
Thanks! I really did not know how the decision was made.
