Republicans don't need another Reagan to win the White House in 2012. What's more, if they do win, they may not even need another Reagan to govern like Reagan in 2013.
Too many Republicans are listening too hard to their critics and not enough at the circumstances shaping the candidates, the race . .. and the four years that will follow.
That Republicans would love to have Reagan back is no surprise. He was one of our greatest presidents and our most recent great one. He was also the epitome of modern conservatism.
Compared to his accomplishments, everything else seems small. He defeated the Soviet Union; we struggle with terrorists. He righted a terrible economy; we can't seem to get a recovery out of neutral. He was unshakable in his principles; today, principles seem rare.
But before Republicans let their gaze turn backward, they need to look forward to how favorable and influential current circumstances could be.
First, their field of presidential candidates is amply qualified to produce a serious contender. The scorn with which the media regard it should be a badge of honor, not a mark of shame. Remember: They dismissed Reagan too. In the end, the race for the nomination will elevate someone who will look presidential.
More important, current prospects are more favorable than Republicans dare imagine. A June 27 Gallup poll showed Obama's approval rating at just 43% vs. a 49% disapproval rating. A recent Pew Research poll shows why.
Two-thirds (67%) of respondents said Obama's policies had made things worse or had no effect on today's economic conditions; just 27% said they'd made things better. Looking ahead, 67% again said economic conditions would be worse or the same a year from now; just 29% said conditions would be better.

America has had its experiment with an Affirmative Action presidency at a time when a real leader was needed. It hasn’t worked out like the Democrats, their leftist media and progressive Republicans hoped it would. Let’s not let the same elements give us the same kind of mistake, only called Republican.
If so, I think she’ll be wearing a skirt.
Or maybe rival Taft for heft.
Yep—and she’ll be announcing soon.
I pray to God that you’re right!
So do I!
He can’t win, he’s just a has-been second rate actor. He’s too old. He’s had too much bad press. We need to run someone who can beat Carter...

Christie is a non-starter.
Tell New Jersey that.
Two things to make me happy, rain and Palin!
Know anything about Thaddeus McCotter?
He is great to listen to but I don’t think his recognition will get him far.
Mrs.President!
Very little aside from him being probably the most conservative congressman from the Great Lakes region. No idea why he's running; he has less name recognition than a local TV weatherman.
And she knows how to accessorize too.
I had the John Batchelor show playing on my computer a few nights ago. I wasn’t paying much attention until this McCotter guy began speaking and then I found myself drawn in by what he was saying. He was talking about outsourcing, the loss of blue collar job opportunities, China’s opinion and military posture towards the US. A variety of things. He seemed well versed about his subjects, they weren’t talking points.
It surprised me to hear that he’s going to make a run for President, I’d never heard of him.
He won’t have a chance. He’s not a phony and he sounded like an intelligent adult. The leaders of the Stupid Party won’t allow a candidate like that when they can instead nominate some ambitious two faced “moderate” masquerading as a conservative.
The same reason John Bolton would never have a chance.
