Rick Perry's Gardasil Problem
RealClearPolitics ^ | June 4, 2011 | Tom Bevan

Posted on 07/25/2011 4:37:40 PM PDT by AHerald

Gov. Perry chose to bypass the legislature and on Feb. 2, 2007, he issued an executive order making Texas the first state in the country requiring all sixth-grade girls to receive the three-shot vaccination series (which cost about $120 per shot).

...

The controversy over Perry's decision deepened as it came to light that his former chief of staff was a lobbyist for Merck and that his chief of staff's mother-in-law, Rep. Dianne White Delisi, was the state director of an advocacy group bankrolled by Merck to push legislatures across the country to put forward bills mandating the Gardasil vaccine for preteen girls.

...

Just six weeks after Perry put pen to paper, the Texas House rebuked him on March 14, 2007, passing HB 1098, overturning his executive order by a vote of 119-21. The Senate followed suit the following month by a vote of 30-1.

...

On May 8, the day the law went into effect, Perry held a press conference surrounded by women touched by cervical cancer. He bemoaned the tenor of a debate that he asserted had been "hijacked by politics and posturing," and blamed future cervical cancer deaths on those who opposed his mandate -- many of whom were fellow Republicans.

...

And in fact, two years later the National Vaccine Information Center issued a report raising serious questions over the harmful side effects of the drug.... an editorial on Gardasil in the Journal of the American Medical Association declared that "serious questions regarding the overall effectiveness of the vaccine" needed to be answered and that more long-term studies were called for.

Perry is not a pro-amnesty person.

He did support a bracero-type of program where Mexicans, after proper applications, would be permitted to legally work in the US doing seasonal work. Such workers would be required to return to their own countries when their limited work visas/seasonal jobs ended.

It’s amazing to see how many Perry and Palin haters are on FR, yet those folks never seem to enter anything negative about Ron Paul. ...Could be a clue....

Priveledge to marry is a States’ Right thing and does not exist in the Federal gov’t. It’s no different than the priveledge to get a driver license. Prerequite requirements of State laws should be met before a license is granted in both cases.

So just how is Perry violating your particular sense of what is law? I suspect you are speaking from a moral rather than a legal basis and slinging mud on Perry, while his State, Texas, does not permit same sex marriage and had a sodomy law overturned by the courts.

Fact of life, kids often have sex at an early age, whether we approve or not. While I wouldn’t mandate vaccination, neither do I think that the punishment for underage sex ought to be death. And if there was an opt out and the vaccination wasn’t mandatory, I don’t see the big problem. Media is loving this issue, making mountains of molehills, that’s how Zero will get re-elected. And, if I’m not mistaken, Perry backed away from mandating the vaccination because of public outcry?

I have a problem with the constant vitriol spewed on this site towards ALL of our potential nominees. It seem we’ve forgotten Reagan’s 11th Commandment. On this type of a site it’s a shame.

Ah yes, RINOs love to roll out Reagan's "11th Commandment" (which is odd because deep down they DESPISE Reagan).

What they don't seem to realize is that Reagan didn't even follow it. Reagan was the first GOP candidate in modern times to challenge a SITTING GOP PRESIDENT for the nomination and he attacked Ford for being a RINO.

Priveledge to marry is a States’ Right thing and does not exist in the Federal gov’t.

Did you learn this at a Ron Paul rally?

It’s no different than the priveledge to get a driver license. Prerequite requirements of State laws should be met before a license is granted in both cases.

So, you are suggesting that a couple that gets married in Florida needs to get remarried if they move to Nebraska?

So just how is Perry violating your particular sense of what is law?

Actually, I'm just interested in seeing how quickly the Libertarians embrace the 14th Amendment that they've despised for so long. The 14th Amendment is what the Libertarians will use to force sodomite marriage on the rest of the nation.

I suspect you are speaking from a moral rather than a legal basis and slinging mud on Perry, while his State, Texas, does not permit same sex marriage and had a sodomy law overturned by the courts.

What does Perry have to do with the sodomy laws in Texas? Were they passed while he was in office? Is he trying to get new ones passed?

And here we go with the same sorry, ‘would you rather have Obama’ meme. If that’s all your camp has, don’t even get in the race.

I am so sick of that ridiculous argument.

You seem to forget that it is a RINO who is MOST RESPONSIBLE for homosexual "marraige." I will support conservatives, that's it. I will not support some RINO who is happy to destroy our Republic one state at a time. It is clear that you are fine with same sex "marriage" as long as the person imposing it has an "R" after their name.

I wish everyone could learn from what happened here in Massachusetts.

Neither states nor courts have "rights." People have rights. Governments, or branches of government, or more accurately the officers of those government departments, have lawful jurisdiction, legitimate powers, and sworn duties.

No one has a right, or lawful jurisdiction, or legitimate power, to overturn the laws of nature and of Nature's God.

To claim they do is to overturn the natural law moral basis for our free republic, which was intended to be a nation of laws, not of men.

Excellent post, EV.

The problem that people have is that they are unwilling to differentiate between immunity and vulnerability.

None of us are immune to HPV, HIV, Hepatitis C or a host of other STDs. However, our lack of immunity DOES NOT necessarily translate into vulnerability.

It certainly is one of the best explanations I've ever seen on this made-up "states' rights" farce.

Yep. We've created a hypersexualized society. Venereal disease rates have increased exponentially. Girls as young as twelve are providing oral sex to multiple boys on a daily basis.

Meanwhile, schools are bringing in "experts" to teach grade schoolers how to "fist" and planned parenthood endorsed a condom that was rated for effectiveness at 49 out of 50.

Is this something you really want to advocate and facilitate?

Incidently, your magical vaccine was rushed through the approval process and it isn't effective against all strains of HPV. Additionally, because it was rushed through, they don't know the long term side effects.

How about letting parents decide whether to have their daughters immunized. Perhaps they set and enforce standards instead of trying to be their kids "buddy."

I am so sick of that ridiculous argument.

Don't you realize? If you don't accept the Obama meme, Obama will win!

If you hang your toilet paper with the loose part forward instead of backwards, that will also make Obama win!

If you step on a crack, Obama wins! If you step on a line, Obama wins too!

WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH YOU! DO YOU WANT OBAMA TO WIN? GO SUPPORT A RINO!

Feel free to copy and paste in response to concern trolls.

What people don't realize is that Merck really needs for every woman on the planet to get Gardasil if at all possible, they need it to pay the Vioxx settlements.

Gov. Perry chose to bypass the legislature and on ...., he issued an executive order making ....

Sort of sounds like what that certain someone currently occupying the White House has done in the recent past so far and further says he is tempted to do even now on the so called debt crisis situation, to raise the debt ceiling via Executive Order no matter what the people want done. What utter arrogance and nonsense. Politicians who do these type of things should be run out of office for so violating the trust and responsibility voters placed in them and maybe even impeached if necessary.

Of course there are those here and elsewhere who will say something like, "well at least HE is OUR corrupt politician, one with an 'R' after his name thus making him one of us" and not a Demoncrat. Perry should be held to the highest standards that conservatives want and expect!

Balderdash. Pure fantasy. Utter BS. Perry is the one of the most pro-illegal alien lover in the RINO Party. Surely you didn't make that statement with a straight face!
