Anders Behring Breivik, who according to his lawyer has admitted his role in the mass murder of at least 93 people in an atrocious but necessary act, could if found guilty be imprisoned beyond the countrys 21-year maximum sentence, according to a Norwegian prosecutor.
But to keep him in jail for the rest of his life, in the countrys famously comfortable prison system, would be unheard of in the peaceful, egalitarian country of five million people, said Carol Sandbye, a lawyer who works in Norways office of public prosecutions.
She said the countrys General Civil Penal Code gives the state prosecutor the right to seek an extension of sentences beyond the 21-year maximum for up to five years at a time, on the condition that the inmate is deemed to be a high risk of repeating serious offences.
Sandbye, who was fielding media calls at the Oslo Police District office Sunday, said its therefore technically possible to keep extending a sentence indefinitely.
You can, but its highly unlikely, she told Postmedia News in a telephone interview. That would mean that person is going to spend his entire life in jail.
Sandbye said that inmates in all civilized countries without the death penalty are eventually paroled.

Then it doesn't really meet the strict definition of a "max", now does it?
Is that a Norwegian version of Ikea?
Who does a guy have to kill to get some room service around here?
At least on a Motel 6 level.
Is that a remote by the bed?
Look at the wall on the right, edge of a plasma TV facing the bed. Google Norway Prison- a lot of the rooms have computers, plasma TVs, bookshelves completely full. It is basically an expensive dorm room.
Yep, that’s a remote, and nice IKEA furniture. How do I get such comfy accomodations?
It seems, I’m speculating, that prisons are to the ruling elites an antiquated idea, that they feel they are forced to implement, until the rest of the uneducated society accepts their enlightened neo-marxist philosophy of tolerance and understanding (of past wrongs against the poor oppressed, misunderstood victims of the society that the society insists mjust be imprisoned.)
Wow, that prison cell looks nicer than any of my college dorm rooms ever were.
Beat me to it! That looks better than my dorm room did too!
Looks like a dorm room to me.
Multi-kulti PC utopianism is leading to the suicide of the West.
It’s like a body that outlaws white blood cells and antibodies, because they are unfair to invading germs, who also have an equal right to live in the body.
They do have the death penalty in Norway; it’s imposed for being a teenager at summer camp.
Peaceful?
Oslo is overrun with foreign gangs and has a crime rate four times New York's!
Well, at least Norway is likely to keep its murderers at home, because anywhere else they go they would not get such a warm welcome back to society. We do not see scads of Norwegian murderers in, say, the USA.
A real civilized society executes murderers.
21 years! That’ll teach ‘em!

Hang his sorry @$$.
Looks like a piñata party in southwest Houston.
