But I only heard Dems deride him for Bedtime for Bonzo and (more rarely) Death Valley Days: never for the appearances you cited.

Bedtime for Bonzo despite its wacky name is not that bad a movie. I have not seen all of Reagan’s movies and no doubt he had some bad ones. He was a democrat while making his movies. He was clearly not in the first rank of movie stars but had what I would say is an above average film career. His last dramatic movie was in The Killers in 1964 which is the only time he played a bad guy. Reagan said he hated that role. That is what I seem to recall clips from that his enemies liked to use against him.
