The Norwegian police on Saturday charged a 32-year-old man, whom they identified as a Christian fundamentalist with right-wing connections, over the bombing of a government center here and a shooting attack on a nearby island that together left at least 91 people dead. Multimedia

SCANPIX, via Associated Press Deadly explosions shattered windows on Friday at the government headquarters in Oslo, which includes the prime ministers office. A spokeswoman for Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg said he was safe. More Photos » The police said they did not know if the man, identified in the Norwegian press as Anders Behring Breivik, was part of a larger conspiracy. He is being questioned under the countrys terrorism laws and is cooperating with the investigation, they said.
We are not sure whether he was alone or had help, a police official, Roger Andresen, said at a televised press conference, adding: What we know is that he is right-wing and a Christian fundamentalist. So far Mr. Breivik has not been linked to any anti-jihadist groups, he said.

Perhaps the bomb was merely a distraction for his main attack. So the real sick “fun” came from getting to kill kids trapped with nowhere to run. Thus, the timing was dictated not by the most effective time for the bomb blast but the most effective time to launch his assault on the island. Doing it then before the Minister arrived on the island with his normal security detail probably gave him the most time to “enjoy” his main goal -— the shooting spree. Judging from the witness descriptions and that one photo, this reminds me of Columbine where the killers were more into the one on one killing and the bombs are a side show.
Though, from what I’ve read, Norway has very few cops per capita (less than half of even Sweden’s minimal level) and even the Royal family travels freely about with minimal security presence.
If the above is true, then Norway caught a break in that a bomb that powerful could have killed hundreds more at a busier time of day.
I'm just sayin'.

I really don’t get this. The press is able to get good pictures of these events from the sky and no one is able to get a sniper up there to pick him off?
great info in your #217 !
Gates of Vienna and Fjordman are heroes in informing people of the war Islam has declared on us.
they, and Spencer at Jihadwatch, and the good people at MEMRI, have done courageous work, for MANY years.
and they could not have got a police sniper on the chopper?
just damm
Hence, obama’s “gift” which doesn’t work so well anymore because he is too much in the public eye to keep it honed.
Is this for real? The first post makes reference to the Tea Party.
Big difference between OKC and now — the Internet. Back then, the information about making powerful bombs with fertilizer was only being used among Islamic terror groups. So McVeigh etal. had to actually go to the Phillipines and make contact with such people to learn the info. Now the info about fertilizer being helpful is common knowledge all over the many stories about OKC. And I’m guessing that the info on how to actually make it is available in many places on the web (I’m guessing it’s knowledge that can be found on the many Islamic terror web sites without much difficulty these days).
Back then, a poorly written Anarchist’s Cookbook would probably be the main source for someone without official military training. These days, anyone with internet access could easily find the knowledge about bomb making.
” and they could not have got a police sniper on the chopper?
just damm “
Somewhere, there is a “Journalistic Code of ‘Ethics’”, which states —
“Thou shalt not take any action which will resolve situations, save lives, or help innocents in any way...
Thou SHALL do everything in your power to create or prolong a crisis, in order to increase body counts...”
It's also being reported that the gunman had a full 30-min to conduct his spree
before any help showed up. These were the students who were twittering
wondering where the help was.
Truly a horrific and helpless situation.
I am glad to know that. The amount of information that is already available on Breivik is ringing my smell test alarm. None of his background associations indicate this type of atrocity.
Thank you sir for the correction. The pieces do not fit on this one.
His actions seem very out of step for his reported background.
The speed of response when dealing with things posted here that are not correct amazes me.
NOT a Christian fundamentalist. I try to be a Christian fundamentalist (but fall way short). One thing a Christian fundamentalist would never do is hurt anyone.
i agree. all absolutely true.
the info is easily obtained.
but again, the NY Times Square bomber, was highly intelligent, and even WITH outside assistance, failed.
and McVey and Nichols, with with assistance,
failed numerous times in their practice runs.
maybe i’m wrong, but i think the knowledge is one thing, pulling it off successfully is another. if Brevik did it all alone, he is amazing.
but i agree it’s possible. and as you say, the ready availibility of the information is a sad reality.
...people fail to realize, that terrorists learn from the mistakes of others, and improve.
(and btw, your other posts have also been excellent and informative. thank you.)
In a world of billions, you will get extreme psychos from time to time. It’s statistically impossible not to. Insanity and evil happen.
I was translating the Spiegel Online article:
Die Angaben des festgenommenen Mannes über sich selbst deuten nach Auskunft der Polizei auf einen "christlich-fundamentalistischen" Standpunkt hin. Man stehe aber vor "äußerst umfassenden und langfristigen Ermittlungen".
Or:
Details given by the arrested man about himself point, according to information provided by the police, to a "christian fundamentalist" viewpoint. However, we're looking at a "extremely thorough and long term investigation".
That's my translation. The story is a little bit different than this AM, but they are still emphasizing it's the police reporting that the suspect himself is claiming that he's a 'christian fundamentalist'.
It doesn't sound to me like the police are claiming that.
Actually, from reading the Spiegel article, I get the idea that 'christian fundamentalist' is questionable.
That's what I think, anyway.
I felt the same way on 9/11 when I saw all those media helicopters flying around filming the tragedy in progress instead of being put to service, landing on the helipads of the buildings to evacuate people.
Media helicopters should be commandeered in emergencies where many lives are in the balance. Utoeya island being the latest example, a sniper on that media helicopter would have saved lives.
