About once a month over the course of his presidency Bill Clinton would unburden himself to Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Taylor Branch.
Last year, Branch published the taped revelations, heavily edited and embellished with his own commentary, in an overpraised but useful volume called The Clinton Tapes.
I say overpraised because anyone who knows the underside of the Clinton White House can see how Branch allowed, even encouraged, Clinton to spin a selectively remembered, self-absolving account of his presidency.
I say useful because every now and then Branch caught up with Clinton before the White House has had a chance to shape the narrative.
For instance, Branch scheduled a visit with Clinton for the night of April 19, 1995. Earlier that day, a truck bomb took out the Murrah building in Oklahoma City, killing 168 people, most of them federal workers.
Clinton shocked Branch by keeping his appointment. The two old friends talked for hours. The phrase painful loss came up between them only in reference to the Arkansas defeat in the NCAA basketball tournament.
Clinton spent but a few minutes on Oklahoma City. The reader learns that the only person Clinton spoke to at the scene was Oklahomas right-wing Republican governor, Frank Keating. Thats it.
Branch returned to a more cheerful White House a month later. He opens this chapter with a revealing sentence: Oklahoma City did not lead overseas as President Clinton had feared, but domestic terror did spawn confusion and denial.
This translates: Clinton did not want the investigation to lead overseas especially when he could exploit the two white, right wing suspectsTimothy McVeigh and Terry Nicholsfor all their political capital.

The Navy was mentioned as to firing missiles that night and the possible shoot down. The one sure thing is the center fuel tank did not explode on its own!
Maybe there were others that got caught, but not the one that got the TWA flight? Some of these terrorists are not known for being very bright.
FYI
PRIME EVIDENCE FOUND THAT DEVICE EXPLODED IN CABIN OF FLIGHT 800
By DON VAN NATTA Jr
Published: August 23, 1996
The White House prevailed on FBI honcho James Kallstrom to ignore the undeniable missile evidence and reassemble the plane.
More than a year later, an uneasy Kallstrom would write the explosion off as a mechanical failure.
Along with his Flt. 800 fantasy, Kallstrom's insistence during the Washington Sniper reign of terror that "white supremacists" were the perps cured me of believing ANYTHING he says or has said. IMO, this man has no credibility at all.
My uncle was one of the lead mechanics for TWA and says no way was it a center fuel tank explosion.
Dittos! I also don’t believe for a minute that the Navy was involved in any way in TWA 800...but isn’t it just like libs to try and blame our own military? These people are truly despicable.
Me too. We were NOT told the truth. My thought however, has always been to a stray from the Perseid meteor shower that peaked around the date of the Flt. 800 disaster. I've seen meteors crest the horizon of the Atlantic ocean (from LI) at or near sunset on two occassions. The descriptions by the witnesses were a perfect fit to what I have observed. jmo
Coincidentally, I know someone who was almost directly under the plane that crashed in the Rockaways a month after 9/11. His story, which he said he told to the FBI-twice, does not agree with the official explaination of that crash.
There were WAY TOO many witnesses regarding flight 800 who saw something rising from the sea that took out that flight.
I call BS on that one.
Gorelick has been floated as the next FBI chief.
Thanks, maggie.
I never, ever saw or heard of that info from the slimes.
I’m sure it was blasted all over the air waves ...
acknowledged, pursued, analyzed and discussed mightily by the Clintonites, intel agencies, pundits and lamestreams .......... /S!
“While the new finding provides evidence that the plane was destroyed by an explosive device, a senior official noted that PETN, or pentaerythritol tetranitrate, was an explosive component commonly found in many bombs and surface-to-air missiles, making it impossible, for now, to know for sure which type of explosive device destroyed the Boeing 747, killing all 230 people aboard.”
Kallstrom sold his soul ....
My son and I also saw the tape on TV before it was pulled and never mentioned again.
Yes but how would you know whether a group took credit? The willing Dem press?
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOMORROW BRO!
