Michele Bachmann Should Not 'Get a Pass' on Past Membership in Anti-Catholic Church
Catholic Online ^ | 7/17/2011 | Deacon Keith A. Fournier

The news and blogosphere is filled with responses to the July 14, 2011 story by Joshua Green, the Senior Editor of the Atlantic, entitled "Michele Bachmann's Church Says the Pope Is the Antichrist." That is because it raises a serious matter which should not be taken lightly, and one which the candidate must address. First, let me share some personal context. I am what is often called a "revert" to the Catholic Church, someone who returned to the Church of my childhood after a long search for the truth. I love being a Catholic Christian. I hold an undergraduate degree and a master's degree in Catholic theology. I am a dissertation away from obtaining a PhD in Catholic Moral Theology. I am also a member of the Clergy, a Deacon. However, I write this article as a private and very concerned citizen.

No one is more anti-catholic than pro-life, pro-homosexual, fetus-harvesting Obama and his minions like the Governor of NY. Thanks for the post.

This story has the smell of a put up job. You're point is correct, it's one thing to accuse Michelle Bachmann of something that her church supposedly espouses. Frankly I'm not sure what the theological questions are. I prefer to judge both candidates on their actions. On the one hand we have , "pro-homosexual, fetus-harvesting Obama and his minions like the Governor of NY..." not to mention economy destroying, America apologist and pro muslim. That's Obie's side in a nutshell. OTOH Michelle Bachmann has raised 5 kids of her own and taken in 25 foster kids over the years, she's staunchly pro-life, a solid fiscal conservative and against homosexual marriage.

Now I've never seen any pastor of Bachmann's screaming "God damn America", she's not known to be friends with convicted domestic terrorists and she doesn't want to "fundamentally transform America", except to bring it closer to it's original constitution. So, being a practicing Catholic myself, I have much more in common with Michelle Bachmann no matter where she goes to church, than I do with the current "in lieu" president we have in the White Hut.

I agree that Michelle Bachmann will have to deal with this question. It's uncomfortable but will only fester until she addresses it. As an evangelical Protestant, I can find many faults in Catholic doctrine but have never believed (or been taught) that the Catholic Pope is the Anti-Christ. I'm a Deacon in my church, I've studied scripture and can find many Catholic doctrines that I disagree with but frankly, I find the doctrine of the Pope as the Anti-Christ to be extreme and unsupported by scripture. At best, it's a weird interpretation of scriptures describing the Anti-Christ. At worst, pure defamation - and this from an evangelical Protestant that finds the office of Pope to be the antithesis of what Jesus taught His Disciples about being humble. However, that's a theological argument that can be debated elsewhere. This is a political site and a political thread. For now, Michelle Bachmann, also my second-favorite conservative for president in 2012, has some "'splanin' to do".

Oh woe, and now all the virtuous Roman Catholics will vote for pro-abortion, pro-euthanasia, pro-fornication Democrats because Michelle Bachmann waited too long for their comfort to walk away from WELS. (Probably because she expects to be traveling all over and it will be a lot easier to find LCMS than WELS to worship in.)

Good point about the Catholic threads. I noticed that too.

WHY do you people insist on hammering on something this stupid?

I don't know what the motives of the posters may be, but I'd rather get this out and debated now, rather than be blindsided by it in 2012.

Keith Fournier must have grown up in the period after the Catholic Church stopped using Latin (outside of Vatican City). It should be res ipse loquitur (not loquitor).

He also meant to say "rein in," not "reign in."

I suspect that Fournier greatly underestimates how widespread these anti-Catholic views are among Protestants.

Exploiting the differences between Evangelicals and non-Evangelicals may be a key part of the Democratic game plan for winning the election in 2012.

LOL! “... “a Catholic cannot be a Christian.” Onus on you to catalog a rebuttal.”

Please. We are constantly subjected to being called “Mary-Ishtar Worshipper” and idolators.

That’s the mild criticism.

“These people do not believe that Catholics are Christians”

Kind of reminds you of the “no salvation outside the Catholic Church” crowd.

Should the Pope “get a pass” on past membership in an anti-Jewish, anti-Protestant Church?

Right, Jim. As Fournier points out in the article, he works with many evangelical protestants and this particular denomination has some strange beliefs. As you say, there are legitimate disputes among Christians concerning the papacy and its authority, and people can disagree on such matters. But when it degenerates into calumny, then it is a problem. She is going to have to explain this. If she can’t do so, she can’t be considered a viable candidate.

Ignoring something like this won’t make it go away.

Exactly.

Bachmann cannot win without the Catholic vote.

She had better address this issue now or forever hold her peace.

Good thing he wasn't in with the Nazis or we'd never hear the end of that. Oh wait . . .

I am a Catholic and a supporter. Just don’t believe there is a bigoted bone in her body.

And she is the best shot conservatives have, including Palin. She is not a feminist, but ‘pro man and woman’.

What are we going to nominate, Romney?
