You know what a true insult from comedian Don Rickles would be? It would be if you appeared on a stage with Rickles and did NOT receive an "insult" from the "Merchant of Venom."
However, many media websites seem to be unaware of Rickles' stock in trade. They are crowing over the fact that they believe Don Rickles delivered serious insults to Bristol and Sarah Palin during a visit of the former to the Tonight Show last Thursday where the comedian was one of the guests. As you can see in this video (and below the fold), Rickles "insults" were relatively mild compared to the zingers he directed towards President Ronald Reagan on stage during his second inauguration in 1985. And the reaction from The Gipper was sheer delight at the "insults."
Yet here we have such sites as Raw Story and andPOP taking the Rickles insults as if they were some sort of serious political commentary. Raw Story leads off with a headline that could also describe a Rickles encounter with anybody on a stage: "Don Rickles makes fun of Bristol Palin to her face."

The funniest bit was Jay asking whether Levi Johnston had read any books upon hearing he was writing one.
The dentist skit with Harvey Korman among my favorites. So many classic moments.. :-)
Rickles is who really put it on the map and made it a National interest. And “Uncle Miltie” was right there beside him.
There were no “attacks”....this is the most reserved anybody has ever seen Don.
Looks like Bristol lets the cat out the bag again when answering Jay’s question of whether “your mom WOULD be a good President,” to which Bristol replied, “yeah I think she WILL.”
My wife is one who to this day does not like Rickles because according to her he is “mean”. I could not get her to understand it was only an act and people actually went to see him in the hopes he would insult them.
She also voted for Obama because, she said, John McCain has a temper (don’t ask) and I think there is a connection.
I think most of us have groups of friends that we behave that way with.
I know that when I get together with friends from the old hometown we behave like that too.
Oops! I put the source as “DUmmie FUnnies.” I meant to type “NewsBusters.” My mistake.
Ironically, “they” say he is one of the nicest people in showbiz. Probably why he is the funniest to the people who know him best.
“That stammering idiot Bob Newhart is here tonight with his hooker wife.”
There was a great documentary about Don Rickles about a couple of years ago. Rickles pointed out that almost are the stars he worked with and “insulted” are now gone.
Bob Newheart always played the stammering nice guy but his stand up routine was filthy.
Those guys really new where the lines were.
Bob Newhart recalls in his autobiography about the time just after bob got newly married, and he took his wife to see Don Rickles. Bob and Don are friends, and Bob and his wife got to see rickles just before the show. Don couldnt stop talking about how much he missed his wife Barbara. How he wished she was there in town with him, how miserable he was without her, and so on. Bob’s wife said to Bob what a sweet kind man Don was, missing his wife like that. Bob warned her “wait until you see his show”. The first thing Don did when he came out onstage was to say: “There he is! The stammering idiot from Chicago, and his hooker wife from Patterson, New Jersey!”
Sure, but most of us can’t order a hit on somebody.
I saw that, he did not. He was his usual comedy routine. Most of the audience were to young to know what his act is.
when he would make a joke he would reach over and touch Bristol. When the show was over he was whispering in her ear. I figured he was saying, I’ll give you a check for your Mother back stage.
Great find!!! NewsBusters updated with that info. Thanx.
I heard that, too. Interesting.
He still has “it.” Sharp, quick wit.
Surprised to see him still alive. Most comedians and actors from that generation are gone.
