“While the religious leaders have not explicitly endorsed Perry, some concluded that he is the most electable Republican among those who share their priorities and even conveyed their wishes to the governor by phone and in meetings over recent weeks.
“What everyone is looking for is somebody who is right on the issues but also has the highest chance possible to beat Obama,” according to Gary Bauer, a Reagan White House aide and former presidential candidate himself.
The religious leaders nudging Perry to run include some formidable figures in conservative political circles: Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, a conservative Christian group in Washington; Southern Baptist Convention official Richard Land; and evangelical historian David Barton.”
