5.3 Earthquake in Upala Alajuela (Earth swallowed up Costa Rican River)
http://www.costaricanewssite.com/5-3-earthquake-in-upala-alajuela ^ | July 14th, 2011

Today at approximately 2:11pm in the afternoon, Upala was rattled by a 5.3 magnitude earthquake that shook products off store shelves and rattled off home furnishings. No immediate damages were reported however later in the afternoon something strange was discovered as a result.

While reporting on the earthquake in Upala today, a local news station discovered that a district near the epicenter was missing a river. That’s right…A RIVER.

Apparently in the moments following the earthquake, a community stood watch as their river disappeared in to the Earth. As of this writing it is still unknown exactly which community this occurred in however once we have the name we will update this article. The affected citizens were interviewed and expressed concern for the loss of this substantial water supply to the area. Not only will this affect humans but also the livestock raised in the area.

Additionally there was also a 4.8 earthquake registered in Guanacaste near Santa Rosa de Bagaces today.

OVSICORI, the nations seismic activity center, has recorded over 4789 tremors in Costa Rica exceeding 1.0 on the Richter Scale.

With all this Earth movement and record rainfall, this is creating concern for areas along the Pacific Coast from landslides.

What is on the minds of many Ticos is whether or not this spike in activity is any indication of something bigger to come. Could this be the “big one” Costa Rica has been expecting? Guess we will have to wait and see.

In the meantime it is always good advice to have emergency supplies like canned foods, flashlights, batteries and water to be safer rather than sorry.

Mrs. Colonel and I (well, she was Mrs. Captain at the time) flew into San Jose on the jump seats of a Herc back in 1989. She was 7 months pregnant at the time and when the pilot pitched out to land, she swore she was gonna have the baby RIGHT damn then. Quite the ride...

Since it does not say the source dried up, my theory would be that the source got “Yellowstoned”. Yellowstone is tipping which is affecting Lake Yellowstone’s shoreline. Some parts that were beach are now high and dry, and in other places forests are in the water. If this happened at the headwaters, the river could very well reappear ... cutting a new channel through new neighborhoods.

Another theory is that it could have been “New Madrased”. At New Madras in the 1850’s, the Mississippi River jumped out of its banks and created a new channel several miles away.

Will know more when someone investigates the headwaters.

We are studying all of this very carefully. We don’t expect her to be going into wilderness areas but her body chemistry happens to attract mosquitoes. We will equip her with DEET & permethrin for the clothes & luggage. We are even starting th 2 week build up for malaria antibiotics on Monday.

As I understand it, Yellowstone isn’t actually “tipping”. The park sits atop a supervolcano, and the caldera, the magma chamber, which collapsed after the last eruption 600,000 years ago, is now slowing refilling..so as the magma rises and fills the chamber, the earth above it deforms as it rises, This area is right under the lake, so as trhe “bottom” of the lake is pushed upwards..water flows out beyond the tradidional lake boundaries..

LOL. That airport is in a lush valley more or less between two mountain ranges. You really have to dump down from 10K ft. to the valley floor pretty fast. And the runway isn’t all that long, either...

That it will flow as an underground river.

There are running rivers underground that go to basins, if the basin fills up then the river will begin to flow on top of the ground again.

If it doesn’t fill or the water finds an outlet then the river will remain underground.

There are underground rivers all over the place, most of them go into large underground basins and are eventually pumped to the surface.

Before there was such a large population there were many more above ground rivers because the basins would get full.

It is pretty much just like the rivers above ground.

When you dowse for water you find what you think is the best place and then you follow the stream in and out of the area to get the best place.

Thanks for reminding me of J. Orlin Grabbe! I had lost all my links to his works when my old ‘puter died 7 years ago.

He was quite the financial genius. So sorry to hear that he has died.
