McConnell: Debt ceiling will not get ‘a single Republican vote’
Washington Post ^ | July 1e, 2011 | Felicia Sonmez

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said Wednesday that his party is united in opposing any effort to raise the debt ceiling, even as he maintained that the country will not default on its debt obligations.

“I bet there won’t be a single Republican vote to raise the debt ceiling at the end of the day,” the Senate’s top Republican said in a radio interview Wednesday morning with conservative commentator Laura Ingraham.

McConnell’s remarks come one day after the Kentucky Republican (sketched out a “back-up plan”) that would shift the political burden of raising the debt ceiling to President Obama and congressional Democrats, allowing for the borrowing limit to be raised without any Republican votes.

McConnell’s “Plan B” would first need to be approved by both chambers and signed into law by Obama in order to take effect – a prospect that was uncertain at best Tuesday evening, as some lawmakers of both parties balked at the idea.

Mitch’s plan was/is a disaster.

What happened to the “Pay Go” pledge of 2009? It was a lie, like most everything else this administration has promised.

The one exception: the effort to “fundamentally transform” the U.S.

“as any student of macro-ecomnomics knows, that which you tax you get less of (successful savers) and that which you subsidize you get more of (freeloaders).”

That’s just simple supply-and-demand. Which goes to show you, there’s no such thing as “macro-economics” that’s not micro-economics or pure psuedo-mathematical bunk.

next thing to do is introduce social security reform such as means-testing.

you don't want to hear what I think about that, Jimmy.

“Doing the right thing for the country is our first obligation, but we cannot force a result, we need to do the next best thing and that’s clarify the differences between the two parties.”

Translated: they want to win the PR game, purely and simply. McConnell’s Plan B works if and only if Obama gets blamed for subsequent failures. Which will result in Republicans winning future elections, which they will use to play all new games.

FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY SOMEONE HELP ME!!!

I am so freeking frustrated and confused that I feel like an absolute idiot that I’m not understanding this...

McConnell says not a single R will vote to increase the debt ceiling. But then he also says later that they, I assume meaning the WH, will get their increase. WTF AM I MISSING HERE?!

I get that he proposes this option that makes the President ask for the increase, which would then fail in the House but then how does that jive with saying the debt limit will eventually be increased???

DeMint is out there saying that the limit will be increased. How if no R will vote for it?

AAAAARGH!!

If they really think that raising the debt ceiling in exchange for a “hope” that the Dems will make promised cuts means these guys are complete and utter jackasses who don’t understand the sh!t storm about to come there way.

McConnell was attempting with this blurb today to recover from yesterday in terms of PR....not in terms of reality.

To give the president the authority to raise the debt ceiling is raising the debt ceiling. So, is McConnell saying that the debt ceiling will get no votes from pubbies the same as saying don’t vote for my idea to give that authority to the President?

In reality, yes, but McConnell PR-land, it is not.

He is another who doesn’t give one whit for the Constitution. He just wants his slow-socialism club in charge and not the other fast-socialism club.

They think we’re idiots. They’re wrong.

They think we’re powerless. They’re right....unless we apply the declaration of independence.

You've apparently never studied economics or logic - OK, got it.

The 14th Amendment says "The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law . . . shall not be questioned."

The Supreme Court ruled in 1935 that that means the U.S. has to pay bondholders (albeit not necessarily in gold).

Does that mean that the bondholders literally have to be paid first? OK, that was figurative, but of the $200 billion coming in in August the bondholders are guaranteed their cut which if IIRC from Karl Rove's appearance the other night on Hannity is $20 billion.

Cuts will always be in the future. Reagan was stiffed with this deal by Tip, and we keep falling for it. Promised to cut 50 trillion over the next 20 years sounds great, right? Charlie meet Lucy.

Bondholders, oh yeah you mean like those GM bondholders that were arbitrarily put at the back of the line, contrary to the law.

Every retirement plan I was ever enrolled in always included SS as a factor in determining the plan contribution. In other words the amount I would get was always offset by the presumed SS benefit I would receive. I currently receive less than half my SS retirement benefit because of other retirement income. And as a bonus I pay taxes on both.

McConnell needs to shut up... It needs to be plainly stated to the Republicans that we the people have had enough and that the government should be shut down until it can be run in a fiscally responsible way.. I would love to hear Boner (sarc) get up and say in a press conference” THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES AND ALL DEMOCRATS ARE LIARS! THE SOCIAL SECURITY CHECKS WILL GO OUT! STOP SCARING OLD PEOPLE !!! (I KNOW , AIN’T GONNA HAPPEN)
