Nice try to spin McConartist’s little plan, but one serious problem... it flies in the face of the Constitution! It is CONGRESS’ duty/right to control spending. To hand this power over to the Executive is DANGEROUS.
Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform, says he supports Minority Leader Mitch McConnells contingency plan designed to force President Obama to assume nearly all of the responsibility for raising the debt ceiling.
Obama is playing politics, Norquist tells National Review Online in an interview. Republicans need to force him to do what the established press is not doing. He says hes got a serious proposal. Could we see it written down please?
“Bad idea on so many levels:
- it lets the President pick his cuts, not Congress.
- it gives 35 Democrats the power to back up the President
- if the President doesnt get what he wats, he vetoes and gets the debt ceiling increase FOR NOTHING”
You’ve summed it up well.
“You people are getting as bad as the creeps on DU. You go crazy on shit spouted from the Washington Post or Politico, taking it as gospel and usually ending up with egg on your face. Did you happen to catch the floor speech from McConnel, shown here on FR? Doesnt sound like a cave to me.”
Yeah, I tend to agree it’s more than meets they eye here. This “proposal” came out WAY too fast after Obama’s threat of Social Security withholding - which is the tactic the Republicans knew was going to be played. That’s exactly why the August 2nd date was constantly harped by the administration and eagerly regurgitated in the press: the checks are to arrive on the 3rd.
It’s a bad option that McConnell put forth. He also knows it has no chance of getting support from his own members in the Senate - Rubio, Paul, DeMint, Johnson, Toomey - none of them would support this. At this stage putting forth Democratic proposals knowing they won’t go anywhere is a way to run out the clock. It’ll make everyone chew on something for a while that won’t go anywhere.
This sounds like surrender. What’s to stop Obama from offering across-the-board spending cuts that he public declares are a gesture and that he knows will be overridden?
The GOP needs to ditch this terrible idea.
Why did he even bring this up, this should have been the Rats trickery to get it done and force all of their rank and file to vote for the increase bypassing the Republicans... Why would a Republican give them the idea?
There’s more in the article behind the link. Advise to read it.
McConnell’s “three separate stages” would be ground out at three separate times in Congress, giving bipartisan members multiple opportunities to raise taxes by whatever stealthy methods (distractions, propaganda, time for lobbies, other tactics).

Emotion is a poor substitute for reason. I called it as I saw it, Mitch elected playing politics over leading and governing. That provides cover or spin how?
I know there is more to the article. I have been reading lots and lots of articles on this subject.
And yes, they caved.
They should have stood strong - no matter the threats.
And yes, the proposal is real contrary to what some here have been saying.

Reaction on the Right to the Mitch McConnell debt-ceiling proposal has been decidedly mixed. Heres the scoreboard so far:
Pro: Fred Barnes, Jennifer Rubin, John Podhoretz, Grover Norquist, Allahpundit
Con: Michelle Malkin, Erick Erickson, Heritage Action For America, Newt Gingrich, Philip Klein, Brent Bozell, Concerned Women for America, Americans for Prosperity, Let Freedom Ring!
-—and most of the people posting on FR about the subject.
Obama threatened that Social Security checks might not be issued, and Republicans are pretending that they must make a deal with him because of that. It’s crookery. Republicans don’t have to make any deal at all, and the Administration’s actions are the Administration’s actions.
Today hell froze over because I agree with Harry Reid and that Weigl guy.
“The plan was met with immediate skepticism from Democrats, as a former spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid labeled it “a complete abrogation of leadership.””
Just walk away! Enough of this crap! Iceland baby. They can’t negotiate with commies.
The RINO’s are still terrified of Barry. They would prefer to surrender and be humiliated again instead of calling out Barry for being a liar. They could easily put together a TV ad showing what a chicken little barry has been with these various deadlines and all the dispecable budget hocus pocus. But then someone might call them mean and racist.
These are historic times and these Republicans will be damned by history.
The only difference between Bush and Obama on the economy is that Bush helped destroy the economy at a slower pace.
Its always brought up, over and over..So-and-so President will cancel elections! Their drunk on power!! Both sides say it, it never materializes.
If they do try it; then I fully support open season on all pol's who supported tampering with our elections; no bag limit.
