I remember seeing them in my travels but none in my old home town in long island. Might be more a middle west store or maybe southern.

I think you’re wrong.
Visit a Dollar General - it’s basically a mini-Walmart.
They have a large variety of items, but not many of each on the shelf (fast inventory turnover).
We’re not talking “durable goods”, we’re talking necessities of life.
