They are more closely related than you would think. And his religion also explains his flip flopping. Mormon missionaries are taught to get a feeling about how someone would like to be responded to, and to change their message accordingly, even to the point of lying.

One of the reasons I could not serve a Mormon mission, I wouldn’t lie to prospective converts even though I was told to. My reasoning was, if we have the truth than why lie?
