New poll finds that Rick Perry would trounce Ron Paul, other GOP presidential contenders in Texas
Houston Chronicle ^ | July 8, 2011 | not stated

Thirty-one percent of poll respondents in the PPP survey said they want Perry to be the Republican nominee, more than double the number who said they would vote for former Massachusetts Gov. Romney. Only 15 percent said Romney would take their vote in the primary.

Tea Party favorite Rep. Michele Bachmann was the first choice of 11 percent of Texas Republicans - the only other candidate to crack double digits.

In the recently poll, conservative voters strongly packed Perry with 34 percent of those self-identified voters saying they would cast a ballot for their governor.

We lived in Paul’s district when he first ran for office. We met him at a neighbors party while he was trying to get support for his first run. His ideas were strange then and they are strange now. He has some really good ideas and some really bad ones.

He’s too old, he’s too ugly, he’s too weird... and I’m just talking about the surface/style stuff, not even getting into policy stuff like how much he hates Jews and loves Jihadists.

Obama would slaughter him. I don’t care what the “match-ups” show now. Once the MSM turned their glarelights on this anti-Semetic homunculus he would plunge like Goldwater against Johnson (with the difference being that Goldwater was actually a good guy).

But none of that much matters because Paul has the same chance of winning the 2012 primary as he did the 2008 primary.

Prediction: Perry/Bachman. BTW, Perry is NOT my first choice, and I hope someone more consistently conservative catches fire.

Like Who?

Allen West and Paul Ryan are not running. General Petraus has been sucked into the Obama-big -govt Borg, nobody knows Of Ken Cuchinelli and Chris Christy is a RINO

I like Cain, Bauchman and Palin if she would run.

I voted for Duncan Hunter in ‘08

Yes he is that’s why I think the media is giving him traction against the others.

I understand. I’d be happy if Cain, Bachman, or Palin were elected. I’d still vote for Hunter ;-)

Unfortunately, it is looking for the moment as if Perry may be the best bet for retiring Obamalini.

I’d be happy with Palin/Paul or Paul/Palin or John Doe/James Smith....as long as Obamalini is removed fomr office.

The proper distinction is:

1. Perry is a conservative politician. He's from Texas, for cryin' out loud.

2. Reagan was a conservative.

he's an avid politician who as governor will ultimately do what the conservative populace of Texas wants him to do.

You against that?

Can you name a candidate for POTUS who isn't "an avid politician?"

I haven't picked my choice yet but I think Perry would be a better candidate than most.

I want the candidate who can beat Obama...and it can't happen too soon!

"Let’s see, Bush vs Obama, yes, let’s just stick with Obama... is that your point?"

I'm sorry, but that is how a very large portion of the voting public would see it on election day with Perry at the top of the ticket. Absolutely guaranteed to turn 2012 into another referendum on Bush. Do we really need to be reminded of how that strategy played out in 2008?

A sitting governor is currently polling 31 pct among party members in his own state? Wow. I mean just wow. Perry's electability is being WAY overstated. All the RudyMcRomneybots carped about how their candidates were 'electable' too. IMO Perry's not even a threat to win the nomination. He's a stalking horse for Mitt in the primaries and a poison pill for the Republican ticket in the general election. Dream candidate for the left.

Salon.com and NPR are pushing him for good reason. Obama's the most vulnerable incumbent since Carter, and Perry's going to hand them the only strategy that could possibly give him another 4 years.

Bot, bot, bot, he's 'electable'... 20 articles a day say so. Perry's like someone handing us a lukewarm diet Coke, when what we ordered is a cold beer. The GOP-E and southern democrats can help us elect a CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICAN in what should be a walkover or pound salt for another 4 years on bammie's kibbutz.

Being a politician from Texas doesn’t automatically make any pol a conservative.

Yes, Reagan was a conservative (I said Reagan wasn’t a faux conservative). Perry is a faux conservative in the opinion of a lot of us here on FR.

No, it doesn't. But being elected -- three times -- in a conservative state makes him a conservative politician.

Perry is, without question, a conservative politician. At the same time, he is assuredly not a conservative.

Why is there an argument over this?

Thanks. It’s a great word. I first heard that word used in the context of American politics in reference to Ross Perot. I think it’s a good description of Ron Paul.

Allen West is a great conservative and a great American and will be ready to run in 2016, if there's no incumbent Republican President in 2016, and 2020 if there is. But he's not ready now.

Don't get me wrong, I think he's ready to BE president TODAY... but there's no way he can pull off a presidential election victory at this stage in his career.

But being elected -- three times -- in a conservative state makes him a conservative politician.

That's an idiotic statement and completely false logic. That is proof of nothing. That's like saying that every soul in attendance at a church is automatically a saint.

I don't live in Texas, but Kay Bailey Hutchison was elected several times, and she is NO conservative. GW Bush was elected in TX and is NO conservative. I'm sure there are many Demonkats who have been elected in TX numerous times and NO Demonkats are conservatives.

I'm signing off. Have a nice weekend.

Oh, fer cryin' out loud. Do you think that Perry might have gotten elected three times without being a "conservative politician".

Don't you understand the distinction between being a "conservative" and being a "conservative politician"?

Do you actually believe that I'm promoting Perry? I'm trying to distinguish for everybody what he is -- and what he isn't.

I don't live in Texas,

Obviously.
