LOS ANGELESM - The not guilty verdict for Casey Anthony on Tuesday also can be seen as a victory for the U.S. justice system, despite strong public opinion that she killed her 2 year-old daughter, legal experts said.
A Florida jury cleared Anthony of the murder charge she faced in the 2008 death of her daughter, Caylee, but found her guilty of lying to police about the incident.
A number of media commentators had expected Anthony to be found guilty of murder in the case, even though prosecutors were forced to rely largely on circumstantial evidence.
Doug Berman, a criminal law professor at Ohio State University, said popular opinion came to the conclusion the 25 year-old Anthony was guilty, but that jurors must hold to a higher standard than the average citizen watching on TV.
That standard is guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
"In some sense, it's a sign that the system worked well," Berman said. "The job of the system is not to turn this into a Hollywood ending, but to have all the
actors in the system do the job to the best of their ability."
Josh Niewoehner, a Chicago attorney who worked on the successful defence of R&B singer R. Kelly against charges of child pornography, said he welcomed the Anthony verdict.
"I commend the jurors for listening to the evidence and not listening to the media," Niewoehner said.
"It's a good day for justice in the sense that you have to prove every element of every crime beyond a reasonable doubt," he added.
The case against Anthony, who had faced the possibility of the death penalty if found guilty of murdering her daughter, was short on forensic evidence, such as Caylee's time or manner of death, Berman said.

It would appear that the jury didn’t see it the way you did.
I do not hold Scripture in the same light as you do.
“It would appear that the jury didnt see it the way you did.”
They lacked the ability to reason. Simple minded people just get overloaded with complex things...and then refuse to look at it when they are overwhelmed.
Which is exactly why they didn’t review ANY EVIDENCE.
They were morons, village idiots no better than the OJ jury.
“The jury used reason, not just the few hairs they had, to decide his case.”
Like considering among other things Amber Frey’s statements, Scott admitting loading a blue tarp onto his boat while in his driveway that he claimed was umbrellas, $10,000 cash in Scott’s hands 30 miles from the Mexican border, and Lacy’s body being found in close proximity to where Scott was fishing even though her car was still at home. Much stronger circumstantial case there, two different cases.
So all 12 jurors were stupid?
Just remember, the prosecution helped choose the jurors. It was probably hard to find 12 people that had
a) never heard of the case
b) were willing to put their lives on hold for six weeks
You can thank Nancy Grace and the rest of the media for that, as well as the lynch mobs that gathered outside of the Anthony’s home everyday to protest.
Their actions drew so much attention to this case that it became impossible to seat a local jury.
Well that is plain obvious. But by the same token how can you possibly speak about 'GOD' when you choose how to take or read the instruction manual HE took the time to send to us to read with understanding. But nevermind when this flesh age ends there won't be this 'confusion' across the buds of the physical mind.
trials are supposed to be unfair to the prosecution.
these prosecutors relied on razzle dazzle with junk science and police in badges to imply an iron clad case.
Remember Nifong?
he is the rule and not the exception. Prosecutors ASSUME everyone is guilty of something. They simply don’t care what you are convicted of.
This mother was a sleaze and a narcicist. That does not dimish the fact prosecutors screwed up.
That’s very informative. Thank you.
“So all 12 jurors were stupid?”
Apparently. We’ll be able to objectively assign stupidity as soon as they all contract up on their magazine deals and book deals.
Juror 14, an alternate has come out with some astounding stupidity already, claiming the death penalty is wrong and stating that he bought into allegations made in the Defense opening, yet never supported with evidence. Of course he is a government teacher so go figure.
it only takes one juror to aquit.
as for the alternate, he is of no consequence then or now since his vote did not count.
in washington DC jury nulification is a way of life.
I think it would be best if we heard from some posters who were on a criminal jury.
did the jury take a quick vote to see if they were in agreement before deliberating? (why bother deliberating for days)
Did anyone have any questions? want to see any evidence?
The foreman’s job is underwhelming, they just sign the verdict form.
He also stated that Casey is a "relatively good parent". There is no overcoming the stupidity of that statement no matter how good the prosecutions case was. The good parent dumped her kid in the swamp wrapped in duct tape and garbage bags and then danced the night away. Evidently this is what passes for good parenting these days. Sick bitch or as juror 14 and Geraldo Rivera think "good parent"?
At a minimum she should have been convicted of aggravated child abuse.
And perhaps you should stick it where the sun don’t shine jerk
The sun seldom shines on assholes which is why your Vitamin D deficiency drives you to insane comments about lynch mobs. You are very much in tune with the lefty assholes on that score. Shmuck.
Its it just me or have I not seen you round these parts in some time?
Bttt....plenty of jackasses here nowadays
They know where to go anti freep....idiots
God bless
Bingo. I’ve already been called “too stupid to vote” by idiots that just point to this or that without discussing how courts work.
It’s simple: the prosecution, in this case, DID NOT prove BEYOND a reasonable doubt that Casey killed Caylee. The defense did their job of introducing doubt.
I’m not commenting on what I think happened or who did it or how stupid the jurors are, I’m just stating fact.
For that I get slammed by so-called conservatives here at FR that are clearly leading with their emotions (like libs).
Yup, interesting times here at FR.
Sometimes I think we live in a right vs. left world.
Other times I think we live in a rational vs. emotional world.
It seems to me that the more rational people were not entirely convinced that she murdered the little girl (or are at least accepting of the jury’s verdict), while the more emotional types (Nancy Grace, Shepard Smith) are incredulous.
"Its it just me or have I not seen you round these parts in some time?" or have I not seen you round these parts in some time? There have been a number of distractions in my personal life that have kept me away from the computer and Free Republic except for brief periods of time. I have concentrated on Canadian issues during those times.
Some distractions still persist, so my attendance may be spotty.
