Obama administration calls for halt to Texas execution

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration took the unusual step Friday of asking the Supreme Court to stop Texas from executing a Mexican citizen convicted of raping and killing a 16-year-old girl.

The administration said the court should delay the planned July 7 execution of Humberto Leal for up to six months to give Congress time to consider legislation that would directly affect Leal's case.

The 38-year-old native of Monterrey wasn't told he could contact the Mexican Consulate after his arrest in the murder of Adria Sauceda. His lawyers say police violated an international treaty by not telling Leal he could have consular assistance.

It looks like President Obama is taking their cue from the United Nations. Too bad he couldn't give Governor Perry or law-abiding citizens of Texas the same consideration.

I’m not sure how many states will comprise the USA after Obama’s term ends, but it will be less than 50, with stunts like this.

...and perhaps that is his ultimate objective.

Once again, President Not-My-Fault finds another person or group (SCOTUS) to interfere with a court ruling, so later during his run, he can swear that it wasn’t his fault that the Courts delayed the execution of a foreign scum.

How is legislation today going to effect a case from
20 years ago??

Is there some precedent for this?

Or are they making up the rules as they go?

Well...that was a dumb question. Sorry, I'm having a blond day.

I always thought that one abides by the laws of the land they were in.

Here is to hoping that Gov. Perry extends a middle finger to The Won and the UN.

"The Obama administration took the unusual step Friday of asking the Supreme Court to stop Texas from executing a Mexican citizen convicted of raping and killing a 16-year-old girl."

If you ever needed a reason to unleash your inner hatred of this monster, this is it.

I can only hope that Governor Perry responds to Obama the same way he responded to the EU about a Texas execution back in 2007:

Aug. 21, 2007
“230 years ago, our forefathers fought a war to throw off the yoke of a European monarch and gain the freedom of self-determination. Texans long ago decided that the death penalty is a just and appropriate punishment for the most horrible crimes committed against our citizens. While we respect our friends in Europe, welcome their investment in our state and appreciate their interest in our laws, Texans are doing just fine governing Texas.”

You can pass a law that essentially pardons existing convicts as well as changing the law for future cases, though not saying it's called for in this case. Here in AZ, some guy got convicted in one of our marxist counties for killing someone in self defense. The legislature clarified the law, and specifically made the new rules retroactive to fix this guy's situation. I think they may even have mentioned him by name. (Actually they did so twice, and once Manet NapoliReno, noted Marxist, was no longer the Governator of AZ, it was signed into law.)

Not sure how Congress can change Texas law, however.
