Amazon terminates deal with 25,000 Calif. affiliates
The Orange County Register ^ | 6/30/2011 | Jan Norman

Gov. Jerry Brown has signed into law California’s tax on Internet sales through affiliate advertising which will immediately cut small-business website revenue 20% to 30%, experts say.

The bill, AB 28X, takes effect immediately. The state Board of Equalization says the tax will raise $200 million a year, but critics claim it will raise nothing because online retailers will end their affiliate programs rather than collect the tax.

Amazon has already emailed its termination of its affiliate advertising program with 25,000 websites

I do the same thing whenever I drive through SC. It's foolish to drive miles and miles out of my way to save a couple of bucks, but if I know that I'm headed there anyway, I make sure that the tank is on "E" as I roll over the border.

NC just raised their gas tax another 2.5 cents. I think that they're trying to make sure people stay out of the state.

You are correct as I should have expanded my comments to note the difference between static and dynamic evaluation of a proposal. Your comments include the dynamic effects that will result from the new law.

That’s the beauty of Federalism. If you don’t like the laws in one state then move to another state. Competition between the states helps everyone.

There are other tax loses for CA besides just the sales tax when Amazon terminates its CA affiliates.

Maybe 25,000 businesses closed & not paying business taxes.

All the sales taxes paid by these businesses in maintaining their business are gone.

With their income cut, that's 25,000 or more taxpayers paying less income tax.

Some people are out of a job, so unemployment & welfare costs increase.

Plus, all the people considering opening an Internet based business in CA are now rethinking that foolish idea. So, Brown & Co. not only reduced current tax revenues, but future revenues, too.

You are correct for the reasons I noted in a response to another FReeper @ #62.

look at the video again when he’s speaking.... he was blinking like crazy and looking away. It’s just really weird, he must be in a mess financially and needs some work in Hollyweird. That’s why most comedians are libs..... if they don’t toe the line.... no work.

Well done!

Apparently your post is just as popular. We should start a business - "Best Dawgg's Quips" or something.

We'll just be sure not to have a California address.

I don't think you understand things right here. Amazon marketplace sellers in California who sell thought Amazon collect state sales tax. Amazon, which isn't in California, doesn't collect sales tax for products coming from another state. CA’s theory is that an affiliate, IE someone with an ad on their website who then collects a commission on sales, is now Amazon's point of presence and thus all sales must collect sales tax.

That theory is unconstitutional.

“Is that a merchant who uses the amazon platform to do business on the internet?”

Yup. I get a lot of books and movies thru Amazon; often you can get them cheaper thru the affiliates even with the “postage and handling” costs.

Hate to see it happen, but somebody has to stand up to this crap.

"My husband and I shrugged a few years ago. The hassle with the dozens of taxes and literally hundreds of regulations, coupled with the puny take-home....well...we shrugged. We have enough, now to live reasonably comfortable. It was time to give it up."

Most of my family shrugged. Sort of. We have a family owned business and took ourselves off the payroll. No more FICA taxes and contributions to Unemployment and Social Security and Workman's Comp contributions. My wife took a job with a Government Contractor and we are paying off all our debt (mostly business debt) in a rapid fashion. We already own all our property out right save for our twice yearly tax payments to the state.

Now we are working towards a very low financial profile where we spend and earn very little money yet maintain a robust lifestyle.

Our next move is a small farm near town so we can expand our gardening and can also maintain a few cows and pigs and chickens for food.

Still not as good as The Greaseman referring to “Deliverance” as a training film in West Virginia.

IN N OUT Burger better start building more IN N OUT burgers in Texas because I foresee at least 25,000 Californians moving here sooner than later and probably a whole lot more.

I sure hope Togo’s Sandwich follows. And Pollo Loco too for that matter.

Is there any doubt, that as federal and state governments start seeing more companies flee rather than pay obscenely high taxes, some brilliant Democrat will propose a law to prevent companies from "escaping?"

like the NLRB tried to do to Boeing ? yeah. asshats showed all their cards.

Most of California's employment solution is to implement the “Cause Business to Flee Tax” whereby they don't have to deal with anymore “nasty” businesses causing global warming/global cooling/climate change/disruptification/mayonnaise induced heating and cooling.
It seems a little odd that they would want to tax a fairly low impact business like businesses on the Internet to leave, but all they know is TAX.

I suppose sanctuary cities cost a lot, what with the “free” money going to people who never paid in and scamming businesses that pay no taxes on the illegal aliens they hire. So they will make the Internet businesses pay.

Somehow, by eliminating most business by taxing and regulating it out of the state, this will encourage “green jobs.”

Rotsa Ruck.

Board of Equalization

I'm not from CA, but I've never heard of this. Sounds like something out of 1984, or maybe the old Soviet Union.

Apparently, one tax agency just isn't enough for California. It has two: the Board of Equalization for sales/use taxes and the Franchise Tax Board for income taxes.

I have friends in New York state who will drive thirty miles or more just to buy gasoline in New Jersey where the gas taxes are much lower.

Or dive to Pennsylvania for cloths which are not taxed there.

That’s a little over the top.*

Perhaps, it’s probably only 25 to 50% of it that has been conquered by Mexico.

///
yes. certainly.
...but not by much.

if Mexico sent an Army in, not shooting, just occupying,
of 50,000 and confiscated a few billion dollars,
this would be an intolerable act of war.

...so how about an invading army of millions,
that IS shooting and killing US Citizens on a daily basis?

“The state’s population includes 3.2 million illegal aliens — almost 24% of all illegal aliens in America — have chosen preferred domicile.

Despite its $26 billion budget deficit, the state spends $21.5 billion dollars annually subsidizing illegal alien health care, education, welfare, other state benefits and criminal justice. Every California native-born household chips in $2438 each year to help.

Unless you commit a violent felony, the state leaves you alone. “
