The only issue I hear from people is that they don't like that she quit being Governor before her time was up. I don't know how to respond to that.

Her defenders like to say that she quit because of the lawsuits.

In her resignation speech, Palin (™) mentions the lawsuits but doesn't give that as the reason for her resignation.

From the resignation speech of Sarah Palin (™):

And so as I thought about this announcement that I wouldn’t run for re-election and what it means for Alaska, I thought about how much fun some governors have as lame ducks… travel around the state, to the Lower 48 (maybe), overseas on international trade – as so many politicians do. And then I thought – that’s what’s wrong – many just accept that lame duck status, hit the road, draw the paycheck, and “milk it”. I’m not putting Alaska through that – I promised efficiencies and effectiveness! ? That’s not how I am wired. I am not wired to operate under the same old “politics as usual.” I promised that four years ago – and I meant it.

You can read the full transcript here and watch the speech here: Part1 Part2

I don't know how you can claim lame duck status when you have 16 months left in your term.

A few months later with Bill O'Reilly, she again cited the "lame duck" status as her reason for quitting.

I’m not putting Alaska through that ...

Like I said - she put Alaska ahead of herself. Probably a difficult concept for some to grasp.

“Her defenders like to say that she quit because of...”

The “because of...” part varies, as you’ve pointed out. But it’s not the important part.

She quit. It is a negative to most conservatives. No question. Nobody is perfect.

But knowing when your usefulness has expired and/or voluntarily quitting when you can no longer handle the job would not be such a bad trait in a politician.

Of course, it would be fairer to voters to warn them you might just up and quit half way through a term.

If she’d say “if I do as bad as Obama has done in MY first two years, I’ll quit”, I’d guess that she’d get MORE votes not less.
