J.W.P. mentioned the dolls in the Dallas Morning News expose in April "John Wiley Price still engaging, enraging after 27 years as Dallas County Commissioner")...

"On the second floor, an extensive collection of black dolls dominates a guest bedroom. They run the gamut from black Barbie-style to baby dolls to a Sammy Davis Jr. look-alike. Dozens of them are arranged in horizontal rows on a double bed. Others sit nearby in a variety of arrangements.

He began collecting them after reading about psychological research on black children in 1950. When presented with identical black dolls and white dolls, they often preferred playing with the white ones and attributed positive characteristics to them instead of the black dolls.

The research project concluded that racial discrimination and segregation caused black children to develop self-hatred. NAACP lawyers used the study in the landmark U.S. Supreme Court case to desegregate public schools.

'I call them my Brown vs. Board of Education dolls,' Price says, surveying his collection."
