“Contacting the world: Annual ARRL field day this weekend for ham radio aficionados”

By Maureen Moore/TWN Staff Writer
Posted: 06/24/2011 10:54:49 AM PDT

SNIPPET: “A 24-hour worldwide contest will take place this weekend as ham radio operators take to the air in the American Radio Relay League’s annual field day. The goal is to contact as many other ham radio users around the world within a 24-hour period beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday and ending at 11 a.m. Sunday.

Operators will be setting up their stations and will be on the air at various bands or frequencies.

This year, the Mendocino County Amateur Radio Communication Service is again sponsoring a local spot for those interested to take part in the field day.

“We will set up radio transmitting and receiving equipment at the Mendocino County Office of Education in Talmage,” said Jim Cline. “We will be able to test our skills in operating radio communication equipment in situations where electrical power is limited or unavailable.

“This type of exercise, along with operators’ dedication to public service, allows them to step in and help emergency officials, hospitals, clinics, schools and relief organizations when disaster strikes.””

Most of the clubs are also doing a “Get On The Air” opportunity for those who just want to try talking on the radio. It’s a hit with the kids... of all ages.

A couple of my best memories, growing up, with my Father were attending ARRL field days, and ham club swap meets.
