ARRL Field Day Overview
ARRL Field Day is the single most popular on-the-air event held annually in the US and Canada. Each year over 35,000 amateurs gather with their clubs, friends or simply by themselves to operate.
ARRL Field Day is not a fully adjudicated contest, which explains much of its popularity. It is a time where many aspects of Amateur Radio come together to highlight our many roles. While some will treat it as a contest, most groups use the opportunity to practice their emergency response capabilities. It is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate Amateur Radio to local elected community leaders, key individuals with the organizations that Amateur Radio might serve in an emergency, as well as the general public. For many clubs, ARRL Field Day is one of the highlights of their annual calendar.

SNIPPET: “This annual event, called “Field Day,” is the climax of the week long “Amateur Radio Week’ sponsored by the ARRL, the national association for amateur radio. Using only emergency power supplies, batteries, generators and solar power, ham operators will construct emergency stations in parks, shopping malls, schools and back yards around the country.”
SNIPPET: “In the Saginaw area, there are more than 200 amateur radio licenses. To learn more about amateur radio, go to http://www.emergency-radio.org. Judy WeirAuch, KC8BYI, is president of the Saginaw Valley Amateur Radio Association.”
“Field Day from Space: International Space Station Could be Active for ARRL Field Day”
06/20/2011
SNIPPET: “According to NASA ISS Ham Radio Project Engineer Kenneth Ransom, N5VHO, the crew on board the International Space Station (ISS) could very well be on the air for ARRL Field Day, June 25-26.
The ISS will be supporting ARRL Field Day as long as mission events permit, Ransom told the ARRL. The crew will activate one of the automatic modes (crossband or packet digipeater) to allow ground stations to use the ISS as a relay.
Ransom said that the crew may also be available to support direct contacts...”

This video was taken at the ARRL 2010 Field Day site for the Gulf Coast Amateur Radio Club located in New Port Richey. This was our first attempt at flying a helium balloon with a long wire attached. We used a single conductor 24 gauge wire of 130 feet long. Made successful voice and digital contacts around the country with other clubs.
A big thanks to Bill NG4L who recorded and edit this video.

This video is about QRPTTF which is one of my favorite QRP contests. It’s held in late April and a great chance to get out of the house and into the field with your radio gear and get on the air with your some of QRP buddies. This year the theme was “Out Back”. But our weather snow, rain and strong winds keep us goats at home. So we setup in the goat barn and stoked the wood stove to keep warm. We made about 50 contacts and enjoyed the day in spite of our ‘spring’ weather!
