Call it a funeral at sea for the U.S. Navy's Sea Shadow. The stealth ship, which served as an inspiration for the supervillain's supervessel in the James Bond movie "Tomorrow Never Dies," is set to be dismantled and recycled.

The Navy had hoped that a private buyer would come forward and take the spy ship off its hands. Alas, there were no takers, so the bizarre black Sea Shadow is heading for the scrap heap.

I’m sure that some South American drug lord would love to have this for their regular cocaine runs...

Why not post the picture of a ship that most people don't know by its name?

That’s because the phone on the bridge “doesn’t have all the fancy buttons and stuff.”

It’s hard to believe we just “dismantle and recycle’ this cool-looking weapon that America makes. Just hand it to Taiwan so they can use it against China.

The boat looks to be stable when it’s upside down.

Probably best that they get this thing out of the water now, and into the scrapyard as quickly as possible. If its been sitting around for four or five years, it is probably a nightmare of corrosion that even the manufacturer couldn’t repair, and nobody else is going to either.

IMHO that is the main flaw with all multihulls.

You don't see many multihulls attempting solo circumnavigation. When they pitchpole, they cannot be righted by one person, and they will pitchpole in heavy seas, e.g., the roaring forties between Antarctica and the southern tips of S. America and Africa.

What's interesting was that the Sea Shadow's test results did get applied to more modern ships. More recent classes of destroyers and frigates built for the US Navy now have special shapes to drastically reduce the radar cross section (RCS), and a number of foreign frigates have switched to low-observable designs based on what was learned from the Sea Shadow.

Would love to own a Popular Science cover vessel. Can’t find pics of the interior. Think they’d consider a trade for a 2002 Ford Windstar? It’s an SE and a real bute!
