What is Chris Matthews up to? The MSNBC anchor, who once trashed Michele Bachmann as a "zombie" and a "nutcase," on Tuesday praised the Congresswoman as "poised, informed and serious." Touting Bachmann's performance in Monday's Republican presidential debate, he gushed that the Representative did "great."
The Hardball host, who once battled with Bachmann and wondered if she was "hypnotized," hyped that the debate saw "the emergence of a star." He added, "[Bachmann] was, of course, created here. She came off as...poised, informed and serious. Could she be the candidate that Sarah Palin was supposed to be?"
In an amusing moment, Matthews prefaced a question to Jennifer Donahue of the Huffington Post by proclaiming, "I'm not an active Republican." Regular viewers of MSNBC probably already know that.
A partial transcript of the June 16 segment can be found below:
5pm
CHRIS MATTHEWS: Maybe the biggest story from last night was not Romney's cool or Pawlenty's retreat, but the emergence of a star, Michele Bachmann. She was, of course, created here. She came off as poised, informed, that's right, Gene, poised, informed and serious. Could she be the candidate that Sarah Palin was supposed to be?
5:19
MATTHEWS: Well, there's a woman, person, a friend not afraid of the mainstream media.
MICHAEL STEELE: That's right. She's not.
MATTHEWS: No hiding over in Fox land. First of all, what did you think of her performance last night? Because we all thought she was great.

LOL Rollins made one comment one time, recanted it and two weeks you’re still suckling that sow.
I like Bachmann, regardless of what Matthews says. I smell the onset of paranoia concerning Bachmann as a candidate.
Frankly, I don't give a crap because I believe Mrs. Bachmann stepped in over her head when she left state politics.
Something isn't right here and I hope Bachmann is smart enough to realize this unlike John McCain thinking that all of a sudden he's the media darling!
The Rat is Matthews.
They will attempt to stop her at every turn...and they are in agreement on this single thing only.
I know you're a Bachmann supporter and honestly, even though I don't see a way she can win the nomination, I've liked her too the past couple of years. I hope I'm wrong in thinking what I'm thinking.
As dumb as it sounds, Gretchen Carlson (Fox News) has known Bachmann since the early 70’s. She said they're still friendly and she also said (a month ago?) Bachmann is running for a VP slot. IDK. Time will tell.
This brings to mind the quote that “even a broken clock is right twine a day”.
And he called conservative women “broads”...

I love Michele but Sarah’s the one who threatens Obama.
Wait. Is this a trick?
Looks like all the libs are starting to make their picks of who looks like a possibility to win the nomination (with some media backing) BUT who, they assume, can’t beat Mr. obama.
They’re making their picks early this cycle, it seems.
Dunno...guess we’ll see if she ever decides to declare...til then ...pwhttttt....
Danger, Will Robinson!
Matthews has the mind of a peanut... A very corrupt and rotten peanut.
They'll pump up Bachman, who has no political accomplishments, and denigrate Sarah who had a great but brief tenure as the chief exec.
This has been a great week for Bachmann, she hired a high paid hit man in Ed Rollins, has adopted a Rollins strategy of attacking the conservative Palin and not attacking the liberal front runner Mitt Romney.
That strategy has suddenly won over much of the media to finally see something valuable in her worth as a candidate.
Unfortunately, my interest and the medias aren’t the same. There is something very shallow and back room political in Bachmann. I even have my suspicions of her and Cantor, who is part of the Romney machine.
Based on some of the stories today, my feeling is there is a lot happening behind the scenes.
I believe that the GOP (and in turn the MSM) wants to pit Governor Palin and Michele Bachmann against each other. I think Rollins is part of this, as he not-so-long-ago said very unflattering things about Mrs. Bachmann. I trust him about as far as I can throw Chris Matthews down the elevator shaft. (Oh, I’m sorry—was I smiling on that last sentence?)
I think the GOP (fueled by the MSM) wants the public to think that there is friction between the two women, and that this appearance of a feud or “catfight” will be off-putting and tarnish BOTH women with the voters. They want Romney to hover above the “fray” and look like the serious candidate who will get things done.
The GOP elite hate both women—Governor Palin is well aware of this; I just hope that Michele Bachmann can smell the stench as well. I would love it if SP and MB were plotting against the establishment, themselves.
Hey, maybe they are! ;^)
At some point Bachmann turned on Palin. I am beginning to wonder if Rep Bachmann approached Gov Palin about a potential slot on her ticket (should she run) and was rebuffed due to her lack of executive experience.
Sarah is biding her time. When she gives us the signal, we'll know what to do.
