People Using Homeless Shelters Surges 57%

As the recession gripped America, thousands more people in rural and suburban areas turned to homeless shelters for help.

The number of people using shelters or transitional housing in suburban and rural areas increased 57 percent from 2007 to 2010, with more than 500,000 people from smaller communities seeking help in 2010, according to a report by the Housing and Urban Development Department. During the same time there was a decrease in the use of shelters in urban areas.

HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan said Tuesday in a conference call with reporters that about 40 percent of those who served in the armed forces come from rural areas and homelessness among Iraq and Afghanistan veterans could be a contributing factor. He said the agency is stepping up efforts to combat homelessness near some military bases, and that legislation signed in 2009 by President Barack Obama contained a component that opens the door for more programs targeting homelessness in rural areas.

“Hope and change” How do you all like that hope and change thing so far? Is this the kind of change you were looking for when you voted this boob into office?

Obviously these people became homeless under Bush but were too afraid to come out of hiding, for fear that Bush would kill them, until they were sure the Saviour had been elected and it was OK to seek public assistance again.

This CAN'T be!

We've been told over and over again that homeless shelter occupancy during republican administrations is always overflowing past the brim, while occupancy during dem regimes is 0%.

Any word of this on the MSM.

Normally they will only mention the homeless during a Republican administration.

But these are pretty big numbers. Might be unseemly if they ignore it and the masses hear about it anyway.

Figures the LA Times would have a Happy Face article on the topic today. But buried in the article is the fact that near by communities have seen large increases in the homeless population.

These parasites aren’t paying their far share. I don’t know how they can spend all day luxuriating when they should be paying the same amount of taxes as Mark Cuban.

When it’s all said and done, many of those who survive will be a tough, angry and independent people against contemporary politics in general. Most of those with great incomes get their pay either directly or indirectly (licensed, authorized, zoned, pedigreed services) from government at various levels.
