As Perry flirts with a White House run, Mitt Romney - the man who would be most threatened by a Perry candidacy - is making the tactical decisions of a front-runner. Romney announced that he'll skip the Ames Straw Poll in Iowa this summer.
Perry shares many of Romney's major selling points: He's a smart, fiscally prudent pro-business guy with gubernatorial experience. Plus, he was in the Air Force, worked on the family cotton-farming business, and is a personal cheapskate - the campaign ads write themselves.
And he's good at creating jobs, which is what Americans want regardless of party affiliation right now: The L.A. Times points out that "Perry's state has created more new American jobs in the last four years alone than all the other 49 states combined," a soundbite-ready stat. He also didn't back a universal health-care bill.

What’s the story with the Amazon situation? I read where they are leaving the State over sales tax. Has Perry taken a position and is this a big story in Texas?
Why do FReepers disagree with Sarah, while holding her up as a conservative model?
“He is like a George W Bush candidate.”
Wasn’t he a Bush circle protégé as well? I don’t remember for certain.
Amazon is pulling out of a lot of States that charge and enforce sales taxes. In Texas, that is our primary State tax (6% to State another 1%-1.5% local) (we do have property tax but a majority of that is local driven).
The news was they were planning to close their Irving center, however, I think the State was working something out with them to stay by balancing out the Sales tax issue there with tax breaks in other areas.
Last I heard (probably January or February) it was still in the air.
Too bad Perry hasn’t actually decided yet. The next debate is Monday night. It would be interesting to see him going against Bachmann and Romney.
I understand the Bush people and the Perry people don’t get along. I think it is the old oil field/cotton farmer rivalry. Perry’s family is many generation cotton farmers in Texas, Bush’s family came into Texas mid century for the oil business. Those kind of rivalries are like the A&M/UT rivalry.
One major concern I would have with a Perry nomination — would he select Bush brother Jeb as his VP?
I”m not sure that Perry is that much attached to the Bush group. The Bush contingent basically backed Hutchison against him the last gov. primary. Now if you saying he’d pick Jeb as a way to bring that group of the GOP onboard, well, you maybe correct.
“Romney’s record and positions has ruined Romney’s chances. He’d be better off switching parties and challenging 0bama for the nomination.”
He would actually. Of course that would enrage a great many black Obama supporters and kill him in the general. The leftist hivemind has him right where it wants him - the Trojan horse within our walls.
You are right, the Bush and Perry people don’t get along. Old cotton farmer/oilman rivalry. W wouldn’t campaign for any of Perry’s election bids.
Didn’t you know he is Mr. Conservatism? LOL
The lemm, beli, er.. fans will willingly submit because nobody wants to admit mistakes.
Romney, Giuliani, Gingrich, Perry, Huntsman, etc., on the Establishment / RINO side. Palin, Paul, Bachmann, Cain on the Conservative side. Likely one from each side competing for the win down the stretch, unless Palin just romps.
Gotcha. That is a Perry plus for me, mainly because I don’t like dynasty building. Given time, it turns into actual dynasties.
No conservative will vote for Romney. His creds-socialized medicine, global warming expert, banker that has bankrupted many businesses-just a shade of Obama...
Romney is ruining his own chances very well, thank you.

Some VERY good information from Texas Freepers in this thread.
Thanks for the link.
As a Texan, do you think there is anything to the rumors of Perry being gay in such a way that could be used against him in the general election?
lol...
