SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) -- The Puyehue volcano in southern Chile erupted Saturday, sending a huge plume of smoke and ash into the sky and prompting officials to evacuate about 600 people living nearby. There were no reports of injuries.

Authorities had put the area around the volcano on alert Saturday morning after a flurry of earthquakes, and the eruption began in the afternoon. The National Emergency Office said it recorded an average of 230 tremors an hour.

On the other side of the Andes in Argentina, heavy ash fell on the city of San Carlos de Bariloche.

Bush’s fault and global warming, as well as the greed of American corporations have caused it!

This should add a little more ash into the atmosphere and help cool the Earth down even further.

We could use a little cooling in the southeast! We’re sweltering!

I’m glad there haven’t been any injuries so far, and hope that continues. I feel for the folks under the ash cloud.

AAAGGGHHHH....please no....we’ve had one of the coolest, wettest and cloudiest springs on record....I keep remembering the Krakakow(Sp) volcano, I think, that blew in the late 1800’s and left parts of the Northeast under cloud cover for a whole year....

You mean Krakatoa?

There are other volcanoes that are currently active or recently have been. Just do a search on FR using the word ‘eruption’ and you’ll see them in Japan, Indonesia, Iceland, Krakatoa, North Korea, and other places.

We are in a cooling cycle and all of the volcanic activity just adds to it.

Look at these record low temps.

Remember that Icelandic volcano that went “boom” last year? Think it might have anything to do with the unusual weather patterns we're having this year? Naaa!

Okay, age old question: Why do people live near, next to, on top of VOLCANOES? In the USA, people live BELOW sea level next to the sea. When trouble arrives, as it must, they want the rest of the tax payers to bail them out so they can do it all over again. (Reference definition of insanity)
