For those who never wondered about how Social Security Numbers are generated, the first three digits represent the state of the recipient's mailing address.

According to the Social Security website, "One should not make too much of the "geographical code." It is not meant to be any kind of useable geographical information. The numbering scheme was designed in 1936 (before computers) to make it easier for SSA to store the applications in our files in Baltimore since the files were organized by regions as well as alphabetically. It was really just a bookkeeping device for our own internal use and was never intended to be anything more than that."

"...was never intended to be anything more than that."

I've heard that before.

I'm of the opinion that during the time period when someone applied for Obama's SS card, they - were - physically - in - Connecticut.

I applied for my SS card in 1972 in Phoenix, AZ, and my SS # starts with the geo code of 454.

The geo code mattered when Obama received his SS #. The geo code stopped being a geo code in later years. The supporting SS admin. verbiage/policy particular to this point has been posted here in a number of eligibility threads.

That's a load of crap. I was using the SSN trick on people giving me false names as late as 1994.

In fact the cheat sheet I had was put out by the Feds.

While the first three digits may not mean anything now, they did then. More importantly, they did when the number(s) were stolen by/for Obozo.

Fogbow blames the mistake on Obama’s writing ability.

Could distinguish between a 0 and a 9. He was *only* 15 ya know.

“It is not meant to be any kind of usable geographical information”

“Obfuscation” the Obama crowd's motto.

SO WHAT?

“meant to be”?, Are they or are they not designating the states where they were issued? YES! So who cares about the intention, focus on what IS. They didn't “intend” so we can't use it?

I say BS to that. My SS starts with 347. What does that mean? How about yours?

You might be right for those SS numbers issued within the last few years, but for those of us over the age of 40 it is clearly based on your geographical location.

This comes from their website:

The chart below shows the first 3 digits of the social security numbers assigned throughout the United States and its possessions. See “Note” at bottom of page.

001-003 New Hampshire 261-267 Florida 449-467 Texas 531-539 Washington
004-007 Maine 589-595 627-645 540-544 Oregon
008-009 Vermont 766-772 468-477 Minnesota 545-573 California
010-034 Massachusetts 268-302 Ohio 478-485 Iowa 602-626

237-246 429-432 Arkansas 648-649 729-733 Enumeration at Entry
681-690 676-679 526-527 Arizona

NOTE: The same area, when shown more than once, means that certain numbers have been transferred from one State to another, or that an area has been divided for use among certain geographic locations.

Any number beginning with 000 will NEVER be a valid SSN.

The information in our records about an individual is confidential by law and cannot be disclosed except in certain very restricted cases permitted by regulations.
